Was just reading an article about this event coming up:
http://cricket.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&id=38543 On the night they will be announcing the ODI Dream Team voted for by the players who have represented Australia in the shortened version of the game. I'm sure it's going to cause a lot of debate and conjecture, but I reckon it will be pretty interesting. This is what I have come up with so far for my team: Mark Waugh Adam Gilchrist (WK) Dean Jones Michael Bevan (where he should have batted!) Steven Waugh (C) Andrew Symonds Tom Moody Simon O'Donnell Shane Warne Glenn McGrath Craig McDermott With Ian Harvey as 12th man. And for a point of comparison, here is the worst ODI side ever. Michael Di Venuto Mark Taylor (far too slow batting, although one of the best slips fieldsmen ever) Jamie Siddons Brad Young Phil Emery (WK) Gavin Robertson Peter Taylor (not because he was a dud player, he just looked and bowled funny) Mick Lewis Jo Angel Brett Dorey Paul Wilson A bit more bowler heavy, but they tend to be the more prominent uncos :) What would your team look like? |

Where is David Hookes? Darren Lehmann?
Also dare I say it, but for me i'd be putting Brett Lee in for Glenn McGrath, they have similar ODI bowling averages afaik, but Lee can bat 10x better than McGrath. |

I like Zak's list, Dean Jones and Simon O'Donnell were awesome 1 day players and could score runs really quickly. Also lol at the Peter Taylor comment, I agree with it :)

I also like Zak's team, except for leaving Ponting out. He's scored nearly 1000 more runs than any other Aussie in ODIs and has 20 100s and 55 50s. That's far too impressive a record to leave out.

He a played more then the old school players eg. Ian Chappell, Greg Chappell.
Even players like Dean Jones was only 164-165 matches and he scored some 6000+ runs. Hayden 118 matches for 4000+ runs. And players like Bevan who batted significantly down the order (gawd knows why) have a lot less innings then matches (ie. he scored those 6912 runs in 195 innings). And comparing Ponting to S Waugh and Gilchrist discounts their respective bowling and keeping abilities. I'd also argue alot of the older players played against some much tuffer competition. eg. Scoring 100 verse Bangladesh today versus 100 verses the Windies in the early 80s .... Comparing old stats to new stats is such a pointless activity. They do play more opponents (of varying quality) and they simply play more games. And I still say Bradman would've pwned them all. |
