Steam has received an update, boasting a new look and a bunch of features, one of which is the neat-sounding Guest Pass:

Guest Passes allow owners of certain Steam games (purchased either via Steam or at retail) to let their friends play games for free, for a limited time trial. The first game to take advantage of this new feature is Day of Defeat: Source. Over the next few days, owners of DoD:S will each receive a guest pass to give to a friend. So if you own Day of Defeat: Source, watch your games list for your guest pass to appear, and then send it to a friend.

It will now also download stuff in the background, so if you're on a limited bandwidth plan you might want to check into that.

Yay, the old skin was getting a little old.

The ability to change the skin without having to restart would be just super.

IMHO (!): I used to defend it when others around me said "man that is one ugly interface", and I replied "naw man, its cool, very slick and different". Anyway, I now see the light and have come to realise that is one fugly looking program. "Hi, I'm a Windows 95 app!". Yes, I know form follows function, but ... vomit. Bare bones GTK apps look better.

I never thought I'd give the thumbs up for anything to do with Valve or Steam, but The Ship has been the best combined buying and online playing experience I'd had in 2 years.


Paying for it thru Steam was a breeze thru Paypal, and the game is a s***load of fun - if severe paranioa is something you can shrug off easily ;)


Nice to see there's still decent Au servers for it too
