WRX STI being towed behind a LandRover Discovery LR3 turbo diesel. The steering on the WRX locks on a hairpin corner and the Discovery driver doesnt realize it and tows the WRX into a Wire pole.

towing them with all 4 wheels on the ground is fine as long as it's not an auto, it's only when you lift up one end such as a conventional tow truck and leave the other end's wheels still on the ground that you can cause damage to the centre diff

what if it's auto? wouldn't putting it in N be ok?

nah... unless you undo driveshafts, cos there's still parts spinning around inside the tranny and without pumps etc running you might not have proper lubrication

depends on the car, there's lots of different designs and thus lots of different situations and implications. towies actually get a decent sized, regularly-updated book now which says how to tow each make/model cos it's now too hard to have rules of thumb that can safely be applied across everything

I wonder if they would also be charged with replacing the pole like they do over here.

What Jim said.

If the engine was running and in N, it's ok as the oil pump is going (thus it's ok to neutral coast with the engine on).
If it's off and rolling, bad ju-ju.

Its illegal in QLD at to tow vehicles using a towrope... I guess this vid is a great example of the reasoning behind why it was made illegal.

what happens if you have an auto RWD vehicle and you roll it (engine off) in N down your driveway? will that bother anything?

Since it's not running for any great length of time or at any real speed, it shouldn't.

*shrug* My car (vl commonwhore lolz) shat itself probably 3 years ago, maybe 4 and we towed it a little way away from the main roads and then the towrope broke. Ended up calling RACQ for a tow and was just talking to the towie and he said its illegal anyway and if you had've been caught by the po po you would've been fined.

Could be wrong for all I know, but it was a free tow so I don't know why he would've lied to me. I had a bit of a google but I couldn't turn up anything to do with a tow rope.

As if you'd have a center diff. Get lockable hubs.

I go offroad if it involves going somewhere and not wrecking my car... I just don't go on my roof (or sides) or in mud while doing laps of a 4wd park... Which seems to be all you guys wanna do these days.

Also scarey compressor noises are great for muscling the good car parks at the shops.

Maccas and laps of LCMP ? the only difference is the size of the speed bumps. (oh and its free to do laps of maccas car parks).

Nah the person I was 4wding with went from doing interesting drives in a safe manner to ... meh drives (ie. laps of 4wd parks) in an unsafe manner that involves spending lots of money fixing broken cars... you know breaking axles, rolling cars, wrecking $300 tyres, destroying wheels (I got alloys not steelies). Apparently if you go 4wding with them its a matter of when you roll your car, not if. I choose not to roll my car ... crazy I know!

Why ? I don't earn a bazillion dollars ... Still saving to buy a house (like that will ever happen).

ps. I didn't have that much done to it... still no snorkel, or long range fuel tanks, steering dampers or body lift

pps. What's wrong with 4wd parks ? all the videos I have been shown from them involve some poor sap wrecking their car while a bunch of yahoos stand around and cheer... But even if you don't wreck the car you pay to get in and drive there (how dumb is that when there is unexplored (by anyone inside the park) free tracks in the state forest just outside). And most of the parks don't have anything to see... except poor saps wrecking their cars.

obes, just admit it, you bought a 'girly' or 'toy' 4WD and it strugles to get over speed humps, let along '4WD'ing' in the great outdoors

It looks like in the video that the idiot towing them is going way to fast around the corners, and obviosuly not checking his mirrors.
