I'm going back to Japan for a ski trip. I have bought all new ski gear within the last month for the trip and then therefore can claim the GST back at the international airport. I just got a few quick questions about this. Where do I have to go to do this? I was told that you can do it outside the airport at a office and so they can see it in your main luggage before they check it in. And, Do I have to have it with my cabin luggage or can I pack it in my main luggage? I hope you can understand that. Because I really don't know much about it. Cheers, slink |

from what my mate was telling me, you need to carry it on and the purchase needs to have happened max 30 days before departure
though I am not 100% sure - there is a counter/area where you can go once you are past customs to do the claiming part - no idea if there is an office outside of the airport though |

ok, did this early 2006 at brisbane international.
You need a receipt, an account for them to put the money back into (or cash if you really want), the item and all packaging. You can dump the packaging once you're out of sight but you have to carry the item onboard as the desk is inside customs and thus past checkin. In the brisbane international you just go through customs and it's over on the right. |

and all packaging? s***. Hmmm going to have to fix that up.
I was told at one of the ski shops that there is a desk that you can go to before you check your luggage in, and then therefore it can go in the main luggage. We bought the stuff a few months ago, But one shop dated the receipt a couple of months ahead so it was in the 1 month period. The other 2 shops said to bring the recepts back and they will print us up a new receipt. |

blah. My post dissapeared.
I have to have all the packaging as well?? s***! We bought stuff from 3 places. one shop dated the receipt so that it was purchased within the last month. The other two shops said to bring the receipts back and they wil print them out again. At one of the shops, they said that there is somewhere before you check your main luggage in where you do the GST s*** so you can pack it in your main luggage |

Also if the item is over a certain ammount ($300 I think) the invoice has to have your address and their (the supplier) address.

I went out to go get updated tax invoices today. And what I have to do at the airport is go to customs and they will site all the gear and cross refernece it to the tax invoice. they will then stamp the tax invoice to say that they have sited it, Then the luggage can go back into your main luggage and be checked in. Then all you need to do is take the Tax invoices to the TRS office and they will give you the GST back.
Why would I have to pay GST on an item that I have already bought and used and brought back into the country? |

How much did the GST work out to be anyway?
It sounsd like an aweful lot of trouble just to save a few bucks. The hours you've spent researching how to save those $$ you probably could have made and then-some by working =] |

if you bought it in Australia, and live in Australia, why the hell shouldn't you pay GST just because you're going for a holiday.
GST is for Australian consumption which you just did! |

GST worked out to be a little over $400. So it was worth it.

why? it is not a broadbased tax. plus it is economically inefficient. the GST is wonderful. (just ask Peter Beattie.)

the GST is wonderful. (just ask Peter Beattie.) haha, exactly. the only problem i have with the GST is how it is distributed. that said, if the NSW govt ended up getting more GST income they would just find more ways to mismanage it. |

gst might be wonderful if income tax was abolished... but it wasn't, so it isn't.
