8 ohms thats like ancient stuff. an 8 ohm sub should be able to run off 4 ohm but it might kill the sub lawl

4 ohm is the MINIMUM impedence that the amp is rated for. if the power is rated say 100w @ 4ohms then it would probably only deliver 60-70w @ 8ohms. So there is no problem with powering an 8ohm sub with an amp rated to 4ohms, just be aware that the power output will be less than what the amp can produce at 4ohms.

Been to super cheap (and the like) and they start at around $150-250.
Apparently (and I am only repeating what U have been told) if we use 4ohms it will blow it up. Found one a year or so ago for around $40-50 bucks at super cheap but no longer stock them :( Tried ebay, all 4 ohms. what the hell have you got that need 8ohms? (yet another) arcade machine |

like i said, minimum impedence is 4 ohms, it will run 8 fine. the lower the impedence the harder it is for the amp to run - so for example a 2ohm load would cause failure when using an amp only capable of 4 ohms. Yet an amp rated to 4 ohms can drive an 8 ohm load fine.
I apply this law EVERYDAY, i use, maintain, build and occasionaly design, speaker systems for use as concert arrays upto 120,000 wrms, so i got a bit of a clue whats goin on here compared to mr super cheap knows f*** all :) For what its worth see if the "Solid Audio" line of amps are still at JB's. I had one that i got for $75 that ran my sub for ages without fault. last edited by SquarkyD at 21:50:45 28/Dec/06 |

Just take the pram out, that should bing you down from 8ohms to 4ohms.

from memory all home stereo equipment is 8 ohm, car + marine is 4 ohm.

^^^ 4, 6 and 8 are all commonly found in home hi-fi. 4 is most common in car/marine audio due to helping the amplifier get greater efficiency from the relitivly low voltage power supply, hence the high amperage of car audio gear.

I'd listen to what SquarkyD says. Not because he knows what he is talking about, but because he drives a van.

squarky is 100% correct.
The amp has no impact on what ohmage your system runs at. Ohmage is just a measurement of resistance. as squarky said, if an amp is rated at 4ohms, that is the lowest resistance it will run at. If you wire up your speakers to provide only 2 ohms resistance, the amp will run at 2 ohms. you might blow the amp, but it will still run (however briefly). if you wire up speakers at 8ohms, the amp will simply run at 8ohms at approximately half the power (a bit more as you can *almost* double the power output every time you halve the ohms, and therefore almost halve it when you double the ohms). |

Also note, running two 8 ohm subs / whatever in series will drop your impedence to 4ohms (I believe) I may not have gotten that out right.

^^ depends how you wire but yes you could half the impedence to 4ohms or raise it to 16ohms.
OMFG SQUARKY OHMD U NOOBS best. post. ever. and yes fear my van billy :P |
