Driving along today and saw a merc parked on the side of the road. As we got closer I saw the normal police stickers on the side.

The bastards have upgraded...... godo to see they are getting enough money they can buy mercs to use as speed camera cars.

Looked like a cross between a vito and an a-series

as opposed to the land cruisers?

so was it a suv, station wagon or a van?

speed camera's are legal; theft devices for the state government. This is because they are rarely positioned in speeding blackspots. Rather they are put in places that yield the most revenue.

Therefore I'm not surprised they can afford to upgrade their 'scam-era' vehicles.

If they're yielding the most revenue in these places, doesn't that kinda make them speeding blackspots?

Cameras at the base of hills catching ppl who are simply unaware they have rolled over the speedlimit getting done for doing 65+ in a 60 zone. There is one on Sandgate road 365 days a year must make a fortune.

Agreed. I think while we're at it we could do with a few more Galliardo police cars :D
The most gratuitous waste of money would be when they start using DB9s as police cars.

Speed cameras at the bottom of hills is poor form, but you do have a brake pedal. Or even gears to slow down with.

I don't know about you, however when I'm driving I keep my attention to the task. I can spot a speed camera set-up easily, it is the little buggers with radar guns standing up next to a tree that I can't see. Thankfully the use of speed camera has removed most of those old sk00l setups. More speed cameras I say, keep the little radar gun toting coppers away.

Also, I'm guessing the police logistics have a good deal going with whoever they purchase their fleet's from and wouldn't be paying what we would pay for.

keeps coppers on the streets arresting the real criminals, like modded cars and hoon motorcyclists

Monaros...like, that car that's not in production any more? I figured that's probably why they didn't buy more of them.

Well I thought their standard Commodores and Falcons were much faster then the stocko ones for some reason... not sure where I heard that.

Do cops have some special area (race track type thing) where they can just fang their cars around to get used to high speed handling?

If so that would be cool :)

They sure do.
I was out doing a Posty sponsered defensive driving course and next to the area where we were doing our training you could see a cop car fang it around a bend every now and then.

You'd probably find that the QPS don't pay for the "special" cars, eg: F6, highway Monaros, Clubsports, Merc's, etc. They are provided by the car companies during times such as Xmas & Easter to provide a high visibility of police presence.

Really, what do the car companies get out of it?

You think it's an effective advert?

Yep basically it's free advertising and/or trying to get a leg up in what is a massive fleet vehicle purchaser. So if the Merc's or the F6 perform well, they could be the replacement of choice next year, etc.

Gotta remember that BMW/Merc's, etc are all standard cop cars over in Europe, they aren't anything special it's just the price import tax & shipping costs that make them "prestige" vehicles when they hit our shores.

I didn't think cops were meant to put their camera things at hills because of the way they're designed? I think there was some docco on discovery channel and I'm pretty sure I heard the dude say the speed cameras are designed to be used on a flat, level, straight road. i.e. no corners, no inclines, no nothin but a flat straight stretch of road. Some dude contested his fine and won.

I'm not sure what the entire circumstances of the event were but meh.

How long does it normally take a speeding fine to come through?
Reakon I might have got done on the way down to the tweed. There was a camera which I saw and passed no problems - then like 5 min later there was another! f***ers!
But its been a week!

For the brisbane area they primarly use the Mt Cotton Defensive Driving Course for training new police, I know this because my dad is one of the car & bike instructors. and i get free defensive driving courses there :)

On some of the new police cars they are also beginning to put on non-reflective stickers so that at night time you won't even realise they are near you until you are pretty much up their ass or beside them, some of the sedans also have permenant radar cameras molded onto the door.

Also there is heaps of unmarked, and un-lit/un-sirened (so full standard) police cars too

There is also done up ones getting around with the lights and all (including metellic paint jobs and mags, spoilers, etc)

OH WOW YOU'RE SO f***IN SMART.

I guess for those of you out there I should have said I can't really see why a diesel electric would need a supercharger since all the diesel engine does is turn a generator. But I guess it could be a big generator unlike the power plant in your s***box skyline HAHAHAH

Speeding tickets etc are the only form of government "taxes" where participation is voluntary :)
