Anyone have a recommendation on a good wireless router?
Only things I need is WPA2-PSK and a decent firewall. Also it needs to not be a D-Link (my current DI-524 sucks balls). |

I have a Netgear WGR614 or something that has been fairly reliable, although i imagine that there would be a much newer model out.
Although i have been told by several people that the Linksys WRT54 is very good. |

I'm typing behind a WRT54GL and it was one of the most fun and powerful pieces of network hardware I've played around with (given the cost of ~$100). It's so good that Linksys started scaling back the device over several models to stop the 3rd party firmware from competing with their more expensive routers :) |

Stay away from d-link if you can. In my personal experience, every d-link gear I bought died within a year or two. Linksys and Netgear seems to be pretty solid so far /touches wood.....

Stung. I also went and got myself a Linsys WRT54G from Umart to replace my netgear which I am sick of having to reboot in order to get the wifi to work. Problem is, the WRT54G (which is Version 5) is not compatible with Xbox :(
Only V2 models are compatible. What a suck. Looks like I've wasted my money. |

Stay away from d-link if you can. In my personal experience, every d-link gear I bought died within a year or two. Clearly personal bad luck. I've got DLink equipment five years old still going strong. We regularly run their 2100s and 3200s in 45+ degree air temperature and they survive just fine. Usually I find problems with DLink equipment is down to poor configuration, not product faults. Or attempting to use IBM notebooks, which is just an all round problem when it comes to 802.11b. Netgear we've had a lot of troubles with, particularly when enabling WEP and/or WPA, and while trying to use 802.1q and VLANs. Unfortunately the only main fixes we've been able to get around there is to not use these features, as they cause the APs to reboot when they segfault. In fairness though I have Cisco 837 and 877Ws which crash in much the same way. Perhaps if you're having problems with your 524 you could tell me what the problem is, and email me the config. Kill the password(s), of course. You're of course free to post it here if you like but I'm pretty sure others will just think it spam. |

I also went and got myself a Linsys WRT54G from Umart Guys if you download stuff through BitTorrent, disable DHT in your client. It's recommended for the Linksys as it can lock up after a few days if you leave DHT on. In uTorrent, untick: Preferences->BitTorrent->"Enable DHT Network" |

The reason I switched modems is because my d-link cant hold a wireless connection for more than 20 mins without dropping out. Tested with multiple lappys. I've heard numerous stories about d-link, so I'll never buy them again.
I have my new WRT54G up and running with dd-wrt installed. I couldnt be happier. It does everything I wanted and more. Thanks for the recommendations - especially the tip about dd-wrt |
