Topic: Is anyone here from the old-school of modems?

Hi guys, I'm looking for anyone who might have any idea on Init strings etc for dialup 56k modems?

I'm trying to help a friend with an old dinosaur Compaq EP series P600 computer system, and for some reason when it starts to dial onto the internet, the dialtone is clearly heard, and then it continues to hold the dial-tone noise even while dialing the numbers. Consequently nothing ends up happening and the dial-in session terminates with a server-non-response error.

Anyone remember the old days of Initialization strings, and if you do, what's the strings to terminate dialtone through the voice enumerator? I hope that would be the problem....

I've been having no luck with this one, reinstalled windows XP twice, and spent about 3 hours odd searching through forums to see if anyone has any similar problems, so if anyone has any light to shed on this one I'd be very much grateful....

man I was a whizz with init strings in the old days with my trusty netcomm roadster. What brand of modem is it?

I used to have a s***load of strings written down that I used to give to guys on Powerup in the old modem Quake days, the one I had for the Netcomm was a hooter I used to get pings like 120-140 with it. :) ah the memories...I'll see what I can dig up..

NetComm IN5699_5 is the model

Mate well have a look over here. That has the latest drivers/manual for that modem. It also has a link to a specific set of init strings for that particular modem.

Have a read here in Netcomm's knowledge base

Another guy over here outlines some specific strings and tweaks for that modem he used in optomising his CS gameplay...might help.

a snippet of info I found...
Known Problems

Netcomm internal modem (IN5699 Rev 2)
With Windows XP the driver needed is version 8.18. Some modems may not have had this included in the distribution. Without it, the modem cannot detect dial-tone. and won't attempt to connect.
...dunno if that narrows it down.

And a whole ton of stuff in a here> seriously the more I read about it, sounds like a good paperweight to me.

are both generic strings that have pulled me out of a lot of situations (I used to work on an ISP helpdesk and had to deal with this sort of thing a lot).

Also turn down the modem speed from 115200 to 57600 and turn off error control / flow control. You can also unticked wait for dial tone before dialling but obviously it is doing the initial dial... but it won't hurt.

/edit: also if you really know what your doing you can enable the pre dial terminal window to see exactly what the modem it doing when it's dialling.

Sounds like it's not recognising the dial tone - try ATM0 (zero) to ignore that dial tone detection.

ATX1

then

ATDT Phone number

Most modems default to ATX4 but ATx1 will force the modem to ignore dial and busy tones and force an ATH0 (go off hook) / ATDT (dial number)
