f*** coke, especially the normal stuff.
Only coke I'll usually drink is treating myself to a bottle of Coke Zero after a game of hockey to chillax with back at home. Otherwise the diet homebrand cola stuff also doesn't taste like pure sugary aids and mixes surprisingly well (alot better than normal coke) with JD/JB. is this related only to coke or all soft drinks? All. Only people who love extremely unhealthy diets could possibly love the normal coke, once you cut virtually all processed sugars out of your diet (which you should) and then drink some coke you realise how absolutely BS it tastes. last edited by Loki at 14:25:57 14/Dec/06 |

s***, even switching from coke to a non-sugar cola makes coke taste WAY too sweet. I can only have it super rarely now. |

I switched to Coke Zero as well when it came out, it's just annoying that premixed cans of Burbon & Coke still don't come in Coke Zero form (at least not that I've seen).

once you cut virtually all processed sugars out of your dietCan someone please explain to me why 'processed' sugars (apparently 'processed' sugar is white refined sugar) is worse for you than brown or raw sugar (which I assume people don't believe is 'processed'). |

Apparently its because when the sugar is processed all the minerals and vitamins naturally occuring in sugar are removed. So, when the sugar is used by the body it has to suck vitamins and minerals from other parts of the body depleting, overall, your body of the s*** it needs. To burn off all the energy sugar provides before it gets turned into fat you need to exercise, but because your body has used up alot of vitamins and stuff already you feel tired or lethargic. And thus begins the slippery slope towards being a fat c***. Unless, like trog, you have crazy fast metabolism, then you can eat whatever the f*** you want.

raw sugar requires effort from the body to break it down into the energy sugars required by the body.
white or refined sugar is already broken down, which means there is no effort from the body required and unless used straight away, gets turned into fat. the same way brown / multigrain bread is better for you than white, is the brekadown factor. low GI vs high GI works in the same way, low GI means that it has latent energy that requires effort to be broken down and thus is absorbed over a long period of time giving you sustained energy whereas high GI needs no effort, is absorbed straight away, gives you a quick hit and anything left over is stored as fat |

All I have managed to google says that white sugar is the same as raw sugar except the impurities have been removed. I highly doubt that the body has a hard time breaking down the tiny amount of impurities contained in raw sugar. |

Post a link to something that says that. All I have managed to google says that white sugar is the same as raw sugar except the impurities have been removed I assume your googling skills suck balls... what folows is all I could be bothered linking but if you type "processed sugar bad" into google you get a bunch of links. They mostly just say what i mentioned earlier. Link ...Refined sugar contains no fiber, no minerals, no proteins, no fats, no enzymes, only empty calories. What happens when you eat a refined carbohydrate like sugar? Your body must borrow vital nutrients from healthy cells to metabolize the incomplete food. Calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium are taken from various parts of the body to make use of the sugar. Many times, so much calcium is used to neutralize the effects of sugar that the bones become osteoporotic due to the withdrawn calcium. Link2 Not all sugars are unhealthy; certain sugars have minimal or no negative impact, and remarkable health benefits. But refined white sugar, the table sugar that most people use every day, is harmful, even in small amounts. |

Apparently eating icecubes burns quite a large number of calories just melting them and its not like it requires effort to sit an icecube in your mouth... |

raw sugar is no healthier than processed (white) sugar, its a myth
pure sucrose is white (like most pure crystals) the reason raw sugar isn't white is because of impurities (just like ruby's are red because of impurities in the crystal). minerals are not leached from other cells to metabolise the sugar, i have no idea where that stupid idea came from. minerals and vitamins are typically co-factors or used in enzyme complexes (in the same way that iron is used in haemoglobin). not sure exactly how sucrose absorbtion works, but it may work with a active or facilitated transport system in the cells of the intestines, if its active or facilited it may remove small amounts of calcium or sodium from the cells to do so, but that is typically reabsorbed, i think its pretty unlikely though that this would be significant in teh scheme of things. anyway, case in point, raw sugar is no better than processed sugar. anyway, i'm off to get drunk, out. |

It's a moderation thing.
Things that contain added processed sugar tend to have alot of it (like coke!). Alot of foods out there you're better off eating with naturally occuring sugar incorporated into your diet. That's all. I have NFI if there is a difference between brown and white sugar as far as being 'better for you' is concerned, nF's posts seem reasonable enough. |

fpot basically the jist is you shouldn't have to add any type of sugar to make enhance the taste of something.. as loki said naturally occuring sugars are the ones that process alot better then the ones that are man made.. as well as the things that have naturally occuring sugars generally being 10x better for you with other vitamins and minerals and whatever the f*** else you need.

Tell ya what though, I'd much rather live life than eat only good things. My gf's ex-roomate was a health nut(nothing wrong with that), rarely stayed up late, ate only perfectly good food at all times and sat on the computer all day (gym every 1-2 days also). Well thats great for him, but i don't see any kind of fun in that! |

As it has been stated above, there is no differance in processed sugar and brown sugar (which is also processed). You could arguee that since the brown suger is less pure, it takes more of it to attain equal levels of Sucrose of white sugar. So if you have the same amount by weight, your having less sugar. Which in our lifestyles is probably a good thing. The article was comparing the sugar Sucrose in coke to that of Fructose in fruit. It babbled about the sudden surge of sugar absorbed in the system causes a surge of insulin to be produced. Apparently the high levels of insulin inhibits Serotonin production. A continous (several weeks) intake of high sugar levels could help cause depression. Apparently when seratonin producing cells are inhibited for a time they produce less and less serotonin. Serotonin is linked to mood. Now, apparently this is cause by fairly consistant high levels of insulin in the body. The article whinges that fructose is better because it has more chemical bonds to break down, thus slowing the bodies intake of it. Well, the only differance between Sucrose and Fructose is that Sucrose has 2 sugar monomers (units) in it, bound together. This gets broken down into 2 units of glucose, then absorbed. O, fructose also has 2 more carbon atoms bonded to it. So really that argument is silly. However, Fructose is absorbed by the body using a differnt transporter then glucose. Presumably we have less of these transporters then those for Glucose, this in turn lowers the GI of fructose to that of Glucose, which in turn, reduces the amount of insulin in the blood stream. This apparently doesn't alter the serotonin levels as much and keeps for a more balanced body and mind. So basically the article is saying that fruit is better for you then Coke... well derr.. That's my take on it anyway. |
