england to bat first but they aren't playing Panesar.

Should be a good match, England needed to win the toss to be competitive i think.

I reckon we'll have em all out today though.

2/58 at lunch, australia on top. England elected to bat and they are only scoring at 2 runs an over, only 2 boundaries!

35.1 Lee to Bell, FOUR, messy start from Lee, firing it down the leg side and Bell tickles it fine for four. Wild and woolly... like a highland sheep on crack

40.2 Warne to Bell, no run
40.3 Warne to Bell, no run
40.4 Warne to Bell, no run
40.5 Warne to Bell, no run
40.6 Warne to Bell, no run

Rumours that there's possibly rain on the way. Which is about a week too late for England

I know where you are coming from, but for England to win they have to be aggressive to a certain point. Playing it safe till you get your eye won't do it against Australia. You have to be in their face and beat them at their own game. This test will most likely be a draw.

At this rate they'll be 220-230 at the end of the day which isn't anywhere near enough when they've got use of the pitch at it's best. They're 1 down in the series so they need to be aggressive to hold on to the Ashes and if they're relying on Pietersen and Flintoff to do that later it puts a lot of pressure on them to up the rate significantly.

I dunno Heardy, if england build a big enough innings (which they will, should be 600+ by stumps today) they have a good chance of winning, as long as their bowlers can get wickets.

I thought our bowling display has looked weak and thoughtless today...

Seriously, Mark Taylor is the least interesting commentator ever. He just makes these spectacularly uninteresting and obvious claims - referring to Ponting almost getting run out he launched into this spiel about how he may have "misjudged the run". Everything he says is just so un-insightful it's just annoying.

at least you don't have a mainly pommie commentary team, sitting there gloating how well they are playing and how unlucky they were in the first test!

David Gower, Nasser Hussain, Michael Atherton, David Lloyd, Ian Bothan and Geroff Boycott, then they have 'guest' aussie commentators, Ian Healy, Michael Slater and Mark Taylor

yay for sky sports :/

Pretty good day of cricket.

This is almost certainly going to be a draw now, the only way it wont be is if Australia bowls england out within the first half of the day or so OR England decides to set Australia a target [if they do, its not likely that Australia will be able to reach it in time or England will be able to bowl them out].

Top fightback. Well done to Clarke - he has batted well in his two innings in this series so far. Wouldn't be surprised if he replaces Martyn if they decide to recall Watson for Perth and/or Sydney so they can bring in the Gorilla.

Couldn't see either team taking enough wickets to win tomorrow on this pitch from what I have read about it. Depends if Freddie decides to put on a sporting declaration tomorrow I guess, although he would be mad to. A drawn series is all they need to retain it.

yeah theres a minimum of 39 overs remaining minus 2 for the changeover

so 37ish overs remaining. usually it ends at 6pm, regardless of overs but if it looks like theres going to be a result, they will play out the full overs remaining

so 160ish to get in 30ish overs means that both sides have a chance if austraila decides to go for it, but as you said, if they lose too many wickets, australia will stall for a draw

One thing I find frustrating in test matches is when it gets down to the wire like this, the commentators don't switch as readily into One Day mode - at the end of each over I want to know how many runs were scored off the over, and when they come back from the ad break I want the runs required/balls left screen!@##!@

fair call but do the math.
6 balls in an over.
you generally catch how many runs off the over. might be out by 1 or 2 but you get the idea if they have hit the required 4.5 in this situation.

all you need to know is if they arent talking about the required rate aussies are doing ok.
as soon as they fall under the required runs they start mentioning it.

just listen to abc radio commentary. they actually have a sense of humour. problem with that is the crowd noise is muffled.

in case you need to know about 60 runs off about 80 or 90 balls.

england are going to have a hard time taking the (fake) ashes home this time.

Those poor poms, check this out. :)

Hopeless, absolute rubbish. This has to be regarded as one of the blackest days for English cricket. Strangled when they batted, unable to buy a run let alone occupy the crease for long enough to save the game, England were then out-thought, outgunned, outballsed by Australia in the fourth innings. After such a good first two days, nothing could be as painful as this defeat, not even watching the England rugby team.

Holy crap what a result.

The Pietersen ball must be in his top 5 surely, that was a stone cold stunner!

I copped an absolute bagging from my team mates over here on Saturday morning when the Poms were carving up. Every single one of them made sure to have a dig at me about it.

We have training tonight. As the token Aussie in the team I will be returning the favour :)

I can't believe that actually happened. England have some talented players and when good players play as negatively as that, it is highly unlikely there will be a result unless the opposition get bored out of the game. It shows just how damn good Australia are that they managed to pull that one off. You could see in their celebrations just how good a win it was, especially given how important a game it was.

England didnot give themselves a chance from day one. Their batting was too slow for that pitch and they were playing for a draw. I didn't think that what happened yesterday could or would have happened. Go for the kill Ricky, the English need to be brought back to earth with a massive thump.

Just stumbled accross it.... I thought Adelaide might have been his last test but he'd keep trying to get back in/at least play ODIs for a season or two. Interesting to see what the Aussie side will look like with no Martyn and Watson declaring himself out for Perth. Do they go for a batsman, all rounder or pick five front line bowlers?
