Hey guys, my woman is starting up her home business teaching piano and vocal to students of all ages... I'm just a little concerned on the number of employee's she's allowed to have working for her at home (if any)... So if anyone here has had experience with this sort of thing please advise...
Thanks Martz |

if she has her bluecard (which she'll need unless they skipped music instructors) then she already has access to the info she needs.

I thought the blue card was only for volunteer work involving children. If people give you money, you can be a creepy as you like :D

Jim's advice is, as always, the most accurate you'll find.
I'd be more worried about things like workplace health and safety requirements of having people (especially minors) in your house. For example, if one of them trips over a power cord and their tongue gets stuck in a toaster and the cat claws their eyes out and stuff, you might be in some trouble. I worked from home for like 3 years; I never entertained clients or had customers (other than yo mommas obviously) so the risk was pretty low, but the onus was on me to ensure I had a safe workplace (IIRC). But seriously, if you're going to be having people in your haus, you should be making sure what you can/can't do properly. Plan for the worst, hope for the best - if you get it wrong and some asshat jerk parents try to sue you, you want to make sure your bases are covered. |

I'd be more worried about things like workplace health and safety requirements of having people (especially minors) in your house. This is the most accurate advice given to date. You will need a blue card if your service is directed predominantly towards minors. However the biggest concern is workplace health and safety as it prescribes requirements regarding amenities for employees. Also you will need to ensure that you are permitted to run a business from your residence in accordance with the town planning limitations of your local government authority, and you will need to register with said council as a business. In short your places for further information are the Department of Industrial Relation WH&S division and your local council. edit: And also the Commissioner for Children and Young People. last edited by infi at 23:47:47 27/Nov/06 |

My suggestion would be ask a professional or ring Legal Aid if you're short on cash. Liability insurance and getting a blue card are advised though

I thought the blue card was only for volunteer work involving children while the idea prolly freaks a few people out - many should probably earn a bluecard before even being allowed to bare children. while we're at it let's make people get licences before they can drive computers :P |

while we're at it let's make people get licences before they can drive computers People should have to get a licence to live and you have to renew it every 5 years. "I'm sorry, you're way to ignorant to live, thank you come again". |

I was suprised at the criteria for Blue cards... unless you have literally assaulted/raped one, or sold drugs TO them (drug trafficking in general isn't always classed as exclusion) you can get a Blue card.

And a 'blue card' can also be a term used for the qualification for operating earth moving machinery.
That was a confusing conversation... How quaint the idea of teaching children to play the piano from the comfort of your own home. And then you read the above. Effort +++ for the lose. last edited by captivate at 13:04:09 28/Nov/06 |

marty you don't happen to have a baby named stuart do you ?
blue card is for many things no necessarily earth moving machinery, there is general safety induction which basically allows you to be on a construction site and a few others depending what you're doing |

Do you own the house? If you rent then I don't think that you can run a business from a rental property unless it specifically states in your lease that it is allowed.

Bluecard is for anyone working with children - teachers, bus drivers, etc afaik. Not entirely true. There are some weird finicky rules. When I was full time at the children's hospital working in the entertainment room with kids most of the time, I didn't need a blue card because of my job title. However our work made it a flat out rule that everyone had one just to be safe. Also, the cleaners at the children's didn't need blue cards. |
