The FBI is setting up office in Australia.

The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation will open its office in Sydney on Wednesday morning.

Thomas Fuentes, FBI Special Agent in Charge of International Operations, will officially make the announcement at a press conference at NSW Parliament House on Wednesday.

The FBI office will be based in the office of the Consulate General of the United States in the Sydney CBD.

Special Agent Fuentes manages more than 75 FBI offices worldwide, which are all based in US embassies and consulates.

Born and raised in Chicago, he became a special agent in that city in 1979.

Well that article doesn't answer the only interesting question I can think of about it - what powers do they have in Australia? Can they arrest Australian citizens? Can they wiretap Australian citizens without a warrant? Can they torture Australian citizens?

One would assume not, but given that the USA is gradually sliding over into a police state and we're caught in the vacuum of their downward spiral, anything seems possible.

Having representatives from the federal police in your embassy seems a little different to opening an entire field office. The first thing makes sense - you want people that can liaise with local law enforcement.

Also, the link you provided is even scarier because of the FIRST LINE: "Why does the FBI have an international presence? To protect Americans."

I would imagine their powers are limited to helping with Consulate matters and liasing with Australia authorities about terrorism issues. Technically they can't have any powers, however proximity will probably mean they have much more influence over Australian investigation than they have had previously
