yesterday i recieved a letter from the brisbane city council with 'water advice' for my property. i came in at ~70 litres per day compared with the local average of ~430 litres per day & the brisbane average of ~560 litres per day!! (although a one person household is rated at an average of ~260 litres per day.) so now i'm all for charging high end users... coz i now know i'm not one of em :P i was a bit worried i'd be using excess water because of recently purchacing fishtanks... but fukn'ell... the average household scoffs more water than all of tanks total contents in one day!
anyone else got thier bcc notices & wanna compare? :D |

I don't live in BCC area so not sure if I'll get this letter but I'd estimate my place would come in under the average - by a long shot.
My gf and I do everything to conserve water in our place while neighbours run rampant with their water usage and it f***s me off. I say you should be charged per litre with minimal 'free' water as part of your rates. 0-100L/day attracts X fee, 100-200L higher again and then really sting those water users in the high literage per day. |

i agree. the council obviously have statistics on average water usage. they should just set a low average & charge like all buggery for usage over the average! having these current water restrictions is just kinda dumb with rules like 'no hoses' when that really can't be policed.
also... i'm tired of carrying buckets :P |

The letters are usual sent out with the rates. I doubt that most QGL'ers would get a rates notice :)
But yes, the brisbane average is disgusting |

those averages they quoted are crazy demon, can't believe that bloody hell
we were averaging 160 of town water a day for family of 4 before we got tanks I've often wondered why water isn't charged as a utility like electricity, it doens't seem to be figured into land rates as anything other than a set amount (as opposed to adjustable based on your water consumption) because as far as I can tell they are static |

but it isn't priced properly. until the government allows the market to price water we will always have rediculous overconsumption leading to retarded water crises.

Umm, it is. Within your rates. It's not itemised on our rates as being a water component, nor have our rates fluctuated accordingly from period to period. We're in logan council tho, so I dunno if your rates are itemised showing water as a different amount each time. Are they? |

we got a letter a few months ago saying we were using 1000 litres a day. think it was a typo cause theres no way we use that much. You would be surprised how much water is wasted daily that you just don't notice. A dripping tap can waste more than 35,000 litres of water a year. That's something like 95 litres a day. How many taps do you have in your household? - I have 10 taps (2 external and 8 internal). We also have 3 toilets. Long showers use around 10 to 20 litres a minute, so cutting a 10 minute shower down to 4 minutes will save approx between 60 to 120 litres of water and leaking toilets can waste around 20-40 litres of water an hour. Old style shower heads use about 20 litres of water per minute. Soon adds up, especially if you add in another random factor of a an external pipe connecting your house to the mains if its leaking. |

jim, i think this 'water advice' is the beginning of having a breakdown of water consumption on your rates bill... that's what the fine print at the bottom of my water advice letter says. i checked an old rates bill & it doesn't have a breakdown of charges... it just says 'bcc rates & charges' & 'state govt charges'.
yer, the averages are mad. no wonder there is a water shortage with those crazy averages. when the govt finally starts charging serious money for over-supply of water i could make a few bucks scalping my extra water to neighbours! ;D U might wanna think about showering, Demon : ) but then i wouldn't be a dirty smelly demon :D last edited by demon at 14:58:02 07/Nov/06 |

I like what happened in WA when they privatised water and charged for it.. water shortages so everyone is told to conserve water, everyone does, water company cries they arent selling enough water and put the prices up.

its not our fault the government with all the fat profits over the last howeverymany years have failed to reinvest it in more dams, more recycling, more desalination whatever. there is no reason for us to be in such a water shortage, its only now that we face running out of water in a year and a bit that they are starting to get worried.

The old style shower heads are so much nicer to shower under :( we had a water saving shower head thing once that was so retarded if you turn it on too much a valve would close and shut off the water completely letting NOTHING come out. It was made of plastic and needless to say one day it just blew itself appart, literally. |

Don`t the rates notices all come from 1 place. No. Rates are all done within the local council. Jim: We're in logan council tho Obes Link: Brisbane residents receive the water advice with their quarterly rates account. Logan doesn't, not that I read my dad's rate notices. Our Trucks use recycled water though :o Thats good right? last edited by Scooter at 22:12:31 07/Nov/06 |

we had a water saving shower head thing once that was so retarded if you turn it on too much a valve would close and shut off the water completely letting NOTHING come out. It was made of plastic and needless to say one day it just blew itself appart, literally. The one we had would spew water out in a compressed cone of water that was almost painful to use. I suppose the logic of the designer – if someone actually designed it – was that if people were in pain when they used it, they would have shorter showers. So, I went though E-Bay and found one of those old school shower heads and installed it. Hmm, awesome showers where mind again. Before anybody cries pure jizz at me about how I’m wasting water, our house is on a water meter and we get charged on volume and we are well below the average usage of water. Don`t the rates notices all come from 1 place. Why would city council rates all come one place? |

Water saving shower heads are f***ED. U get like these tiny sprays of water hitting u - it's useless. U need to stand under it 10x as long to actually wash all the soap off so their purpose is defeated too.

i'd get a rain water tank but first i'd have to spend about $10k getting all my roof guttering & downpipes replaced with ones that don't leech evil s*** into the water :( then i'd have to knock down one of my sheds to find a place near the roofing to put the tank. then there is the price of the tank, the pump, the plumbing...etc. then the maintenance... tanks n pumps get dirty n have to be flushed fairly regularly.
i'm not gonna get a rain water tank. :/ |

Sorry you are wrong Kat. 5000 LITRE! 'Poly'/plastic tanks cost no more than $1100. You must have been looking at a 5000 GALLON price.
Here's an estimate for me: Tank $1075 Leaf Guard $65 Pressure Pump $370 First Flush $65 Installation approx $250 (mates rates) Total : $1825 Less rebates - $1500 Net Cost = $325 |
