From AustralianIT
My thoughts are that the industry beats up on their losses due to piracy for the sole reason of furthering their case for securing income via different mediums, wiether it be a blanket tax on recordable media and computers or just a blanket tax on all internet users as suggested in this interview with Peter Jenner. |

If they started selling their products at reasonable prices more people would probably buy instead of pirate. Theres no reason they need to be raking in kazillions of dollars for stuff really... I personally don't think a lot of people out should be worth as much as they are.
That plus the convenience of being able to get something without actually getting off your ass and going to a shop to get it. This is the lazy generation - until they can make use of this properly people are still gonna choose to download. We have the delivery technologies (eg steam is a great success story) - bloody well make use of them already! Next is the churning out of rushed buggy software/games and albums with 2 or 3 decent songs with the rest full of poo filler tracks. You can't persist in pushing out polished turd after polished turd and expect everyone to keep throwing wads of cash in your direction, something has to give. Until the above 3 things are addressed substantially I beleive piracy will simply remain just as rampant as it is now if not worse in the future. |

Considering they are still constantly breaking records with huge piles of cash being reaped at the cinemas and how many million copies of f***ing audio rapings sold the whinging about piracy is nothing but completely laughable.

They fail to realise that the people who copy their stuff in most cases wouldn't buy their product anyway. So they aren't losing any profits but gaining fans
Win/Win I say! |

Am I the only one who thinks Vista and Office 2k7 are going to be Microsoft's most pirated products ever? I mean >1k for Office? >600 for an operating system? They're crazy.
These pirating figures just factor in how much the full retail product is worth IF people bought it. But probably only 1% of people actually buy software if they cant pirate it. |

If pricing was reasonably structured then alot of people might opt for the connvenience of downloading (legally).
My example being - on itunes its $1.69 to download a song, so if your looking at an album with 10 songs, which is a lower average, then thats already $16.90. Personally Id much rather run down to BIG W and get new release CDs for $17.00 - $21.00 and get that greater feeling of satisfaction by holding something in my hand and adding another CD to the collection. Mind you this is only for when you like someone enough to want to try the entire album. Anyway love that someones proven the stats are bulls***, maybe they will stop their whinging for a while, while the re-group and do some real research. |

If that's how much they lost, how much did they earn?
Probably a lot more than what they lost I am guessing. |

i believe alot of people pirate things because they can, for example someone maybe like to jump online and download a movie, instead of course they could go see the movie at the cinema or buy the dvd, all of which costs money and effort, reguardless of cost its still money, where as that someone could download it much easier.
im not saying that they should make things free, im just saying people pirate things cause they can. which is wrong, but hey so is urinating in public. |

Ever since itunes has gotten a fairly decent library going I haven't downloaded any mp3's off of P2P. If I could get my tv series off itunes I would do that as well but unfortunately it seems like all these direct2drive style things that itunes and fileplanet run are only for Americans.

Mind you this is only for when you like someone enough to want to try the entire album. I think there's been only 2 artists to date I've liked enough to bother getting the entire album. Even then one of them was "the best of". Most atists sing one or two good songs that get repeated radio play and then the rest of the album is chock full of s*** fillers. |

You must listen to s*** music. I could name at least 100 albums off the top of my head where every song is good. |

Public urination is common in countries where public toilets are pay per use (by public, I mean that the toilets are in place for the public, outside of any other commercial establishment). I'm sure the toilet owners complain about their lost profits also.

I cant agree, alot of bands that Ive gotten into, I may have heard a song or two on the radio, through a friend or something and really liked/loved it, get the album and then the song/songs that I first loved would become my least favourites due to the awesomeness of the ablum. Yes, this is not always the case. |

My sis earns a tidy sum from her work, she pirates stuff. For games it is like an 'extended demo'. If she likes the game she will go and buy it. EDIT: Part of the reason for this, is that games are soo darned buggy now it is hard to tell if it is worth it untill you've played it on your own computer.
When it comes to Episodes of various series she downloads them because she cant get them or they are increadibly over priced, mostly because she cant get them. I'm sure she would use an Australian services to buy episodes and download them as they become available for a resonable price, as it should make it wayyyy easier to attain then sailing the internet seas, YARRG! \ last edited by Tollaz0r! at 13:06:43 08/Nov/06 |
