base 40-50k + performance bonuses dependant on experience, with room to grow.

Not having a go at you Tung at all - but I cant understand why employers want a specalised sys admin with 3yrs+ of commercial experience and still ask < $50k/yr.
It hints at bonuses I guess which is just an enticer to say "You can earn more money, but in reality you will end up working 7 days a week, insane hours per day to achieve a small bonus so don't expect anything significant" Is it just because the IT industry is innundated with job seekers and not enough jobs, therefore employers can get away with hiring staff far below what their worth? Seems a bit odd, as in 6 months or 12 months that employee will realise there's more money out there if they don't jump at the first job offer and sure enough they'll resign pretty quickly and move on.. |

Well the average(median) full time wage in Aus atm is $54k, so you're not gonna get the best for less than that.

No way, its hard as piss - all those device driver bugs, blue screens, easy to f*** up permission system, etc.
Linux in comparision is much easier to admin, install, configure, leave it until the hardware fails :) |

yeah i understand that. basically that was the base salary he gave me
part of the reason to ask for someone with a few years experience is so they dont get every kid and his dog that has played around with windows applying. by cutting out as much of the crap you are left with hopefully a few people that are good enough for the job that you can choose from |

TicMan, it's a 6man business, not the big boys :)
Still they are only asking for 3 years experience. |

base 40-50k + performance bonuses dependant on experience, with room to grow. That's pretty much 'clued on graduate' level pay. Well, at least every clued on graduate I know gets at least the high range of that. f***, even the not so clued on graduates are earning that. part of the reason to ask for someone with a few years experience is so they dont get every kid and his dog that has played around with windows applying. by cutting out as much of the crap you are left with hopefully a few people that are good enough for the job that you can choose from That might be the theory, but this is what you're probably going to get. 1: Useless graduates (TAFE or Uni) 2: Morons who suck. 3: Junior Sysadmins 4: A senior admin who looking for short time to cover the bills while they find another, better job. If you want to get experienced admins that are going to last, you need to pay a realistic price. According to MyCareer.com (I don't know how valid it is), they have the average price for a Sysadmin is $72,693. So, I'd guess someone with 3 years experience would be looking for 60k |

is that the qld salary typo? because ive gone through salary indices, and qld wage for a sysadmin such as what these people are requiring (someone to do more support than infrastructure, with a few other things thrown in) is nowhere near that.

Maybe not, but we are not 10-20k lower than NSW or VIC. Maybe 5-10k lower. Actually, looking at the Hayes Queensland index, we are exactly 10k less on average. Even then, my price of 60k+ was a really low point, say in Brisbane 55k for anybody with experience. s***, I got 56k as a straight out grad. |

I know a few sys admins in Brisbane who on or above that average but the majority I know fall $5-8k below that.
These are guys with 3yr+ experience in larger environments though (hundreds of servers, not back yard offices with 1). |

ticman is just jealous cos webcentral wouldnt suck his dick anymore and then he got aids and died
ps 40-50k for a small operation doing SME work is about normal. Thats the difference between working in a small computer support company and working for a corporate. |
