The 48 hour exclusivity window for the release of the Battlefield 2 demo on the EA Downloader and then some select partner sites has ended at 5pm today and the demo is now available from a host of fine file services, including ours.

Why?

Most decent ISPs (eg. Internode and iiNet) provide free-traffic mirrors for their customers, and some on ADSL2+ can pull well over 1MB/s.

ga file server rocks, speed never dropped below 1740kB/s on iinet dsl2+ for me

getting 600k on cable from ga is crap, id have a whinge to my isp about that if it was my connection (even though it sounds like the file servers throughput at the time)

Nothing beats that qgl where everyone was playing the bf1942 demo of wake island before the game was released - it was a f***ing brilliant game for its time, now its just more of the same.

im a bit suprised theres not an ausgamers torrent up for this considering the size of the file and amount of people likely to have dramas downloading the demo with a web browser

theres this though

I just get a black screen when trying to launch it.
Got latest drivers/, latest directx etc.
Only solution I found to it was that supposedly some directx dll needed to be in windows system dir which I already had.

Then supposedly only a certain few cards are supported in the demo..
6600 is one of them, and I have the 6600 GT and it doesn't seem to work...

f***s me, but if it requires that much effort for a demo to work limits to only a handful of certain cards it's hopeless already imo.

Sounds like the problem every version of battlefield has had since 1942, it doesnt like refresh rate locking programs.

I only have my refresh rate set through windows (properties settings by right click on desktop).

Just tried putting desktop in 60hz and no go either.

how long have you let it sit on the black screen for?

mine was just a black screen at first but i walked away to answer the phone, when i came back it was working. no idea how long it was black for, but it was more than 10 seconds

Hrm, probably longer than 10 seconds Freewheelin.
It seems like it stops loading anything.
I'll give it another shot though after this southpark WoW episode :)

The concept of hovering battle tanks just seems to have slowed down play soo much its a pain, yes defienately more of a huge mod rather than anything new. It runs great on my machine but even at 1280x960 it still looked arse??have they borked the engine or what?

My biggest complaint is the retarded sifting through all of the new maps that will be available in the full version an all the associated ingame advertising that you are forced to go through at a map restart.

Adds about a full minute or so of crap of screencaps of the maps along with a couple more images of what you will can expect to see in the full game. Just a waste of time if you ask me, EA: STFU an load the map already. At least you can still dump all the movies from the start.

after playing the Quakewars beta I now understand why iD is now getting out of FPS games.

It seems more of a mod then a full priced game.

every first person shooter is merely a quake mod. You could say the same for each version of Windows you run on your computer

It runs great on my machine but even at 1280x960 it still looked arse??

I was very impressed with how much better the game runs and looks compared to the old BF2. My crummy old 7600 looks and runs like a 7900 with this program =) The optimisations are amazing coming from BF2 on a mid-range system. I'm seriously wondering why EA didn't get BF2 working this well!

nah - I'm just a little bitter that an awesome company like iD who had the world in their palm for years, had ther technology, yet wouldn't pull the finger out and push the envelope! they gave it all away to the competition on a platter, opting to instead release some very average single-player FPS games.

all the same, I got back onto broadband just a few weeks ago (after being on dialup for 2 years). BF is a lot of fun - it's definately a stronger direction than iD's pittiful offerings since Q3a

f***ing f***ity.

I've given this piece of s*** more than ample opportunity to redeem itself.
I managed to actually get all in and as soon as I load, I see the game for about 1-2 seconds then I just get crashed back to desktop with "battlefield 2142 has caused an error blah blah blah send/don't send" s***.

I give up, I liked the sound of the gameplay/futuristic style, and despite everyone saying it's s*** wanted to give it a go for myself.
But given BF's previous buggy-as s*** even out of beta, and the probems I'm having with this piece of s*** (didn't have probs with 1942 or BF2 tho), going to go with skipping it.

Game devs releasing such pitiful demo's are really only shooting themselves in the foot imo.

I've played it twice, and thats where its gonna end. Really the gameplay on public servers is just complete ass...

Inf battles, 9/10 times when shooting at some pleb hes flailing around jumping and proning as fast as he can and I still end up killing them. It just looks retarded and gets boring fast.

Aircraft half the time the pilot just suddenly decides to bail really close to an object or ground and weeeee the rest of the crew who don't realise go kaboom.

Vehicles - most nubes just jump in and proceed to speed off (probably only to ram into the nearest solid object and explode). Do they wait for a gunner or passengers? Of course not! That leaves half the team on foot to try and run to the next objective... most of the time which results in being mown down by some other opposing vehicle... woohoo funnnnnntastic!

I guess it kinda has potential for organised clan play but really if it can't do some entertaining pub play I aint gonna bother with it.

I also personally think it looks crap... with a 7900GT - recommended settings gave me pretty much high all in 1024, and sure it plays smooth enough but the text/HUD looks like poo in a non-native res on LCD. Graphics wise not really sure what it is exactly but it didn't really impress... it is on high detail and just looks pretty bland to me, although I spose it is just BF2 with new models after all.

Im out.

it probably makes sense to have the dir structure like that though, otherwise you'd probably have to program special cases for everything when you weren't using a mod

isn't this game more about the depth of the unlocks then anything else. It's still a battlefield title, if they changed it you people would bitching and moaning saying it sux and they should change it back to the old way.

i hate EA as much as teh next guy but rating a game that really doesn't open up until you start unlocking items is kinda pointless isn't it?
a demo is supposed to be about rating it and the evidence is that it sux?

Here's an interesting review of the demo:

Summary:
Total time spent downloading, installing, and trying to get the game to work: 3 days. Total time spent in an actual game: 10 minutes.

Missing dll is related to direcX not being included in the demo itself. If you re-install directX that's that particular problem solved.

They didn't include the latest version of DirectX with the demo to cut down on the size. Install the latest version and you should be good to go

Thats pretty f***ing funny considering the demo is 1.07gig and directx is up to 24mb according to the ms site(2% of the total file size?) That's about 15 seconds or less to download on a modern connection and pushing the file size out to a significantly larger 1.094gig.

If they admitted they forgot it, they'd not only look even more stupid, they'd also look like they don't have any QA. Of course everyone already knew this was the case anyway.

bulls***..

they didn't include the latest DX9 online because it costs an absolute s***load of MS dollars to do so - way more so than getting to cost of dodgey drivers WHQL'd. Given the amount of f***ing around it takes just to get the demo actually working for most gamers out there with illegal installs of XP (ie.. MOST OF YOU), it's little wonder so many people "hate" this demo out of the box.

We won't be seeing the newest version of DX ship with a demo game unless MS deem it in their best interests to do so. Why give you a free upgrade for your dodgy XP install when you could be made to goto the MS site and be forced to verify your install?

If they wanted to do a good release all the had to do was include:

. the "myriad of unlocks" feature
. the new game types feature
. a few new maps
. a few bug fixes

on top of the old game and i would've bought it. I'm still playing BF2 and loving it, but this new space one is just BS.

Huh? I'm not sure why you think that, the DirectX installer is one of the few Microsoft software packages that is freely redistributable - specifically so developers can bundle it with their application.

There is of course an EULA that states under what circumstances this can be used, but the fact that the DirectX installer is present in the vast majority of games and game demos should indicate that it's not a problem.

Can't blame Microsoft for this one.

Does BF2142 have that same feeling the other BF's do while running around, sort of like you are wading through a bucket of invisible molasses? It gets even worse when you step into a building. Do you get decent feedback when firing rifles and other hand held weapons, or does it still feel like your pointing a sprite and clicking a mouse button?

Toll, I never get that feeling from BF2. Prolly helps that I play on a GS7800 an listen through the Gigaworks S750's so the sub kicks in on anything more than 10hz =) and the full on surround sound is incredibly immersive.

Wrong. Vacuum cleaners actually BLOW, not suck. The effect of the air being blown is what causes the vacuum.

I've gotta say I'm really happy with the demo... I'm using it on systems that 'seem' to have very random/infrequent faults. While most diagnostics I throw at machines like this mark the machine as fault-free... the Battlefield demo shows up perfections in a system's software and hardware configuration like moles on a porn-star's titties.

thank God for 1st person shooters ;) It's like Q1 all over again =)

My son likes it, and apparently has the golden touch when logging in and playing it. I watched him for a while, and it seemed ok. BF2 with funky modern stuff.

When I get on, I get on a map, it loads, I "lose contact with the EA master server" and when I try again.. kicked to desktop. I connected once and it said I needed an unmodified version... it's the f***ing demo! There's only one version! I tried again tonight, it loaded, the map finished, it showed me everyone was called "Buddy Name" with 1 point and then kicked me to the desktop. I am yet to successfully even get in a vehicle or walk more than 5 steps before something stops me playing.

Is this "release" software?
