R.I.P Steve Irwin.

I met him a couple of times and he was a top notch guy. I know some of us got annoyed at times with his extremely strong aussie accent giving the world a skewed perception of Aussies, but the guy was out there putting Australia on the map. He was one of those great Aussies who made the rest of teh world stand up and take note of the land down under.

He will be sorely missed :(

Woah, some people work fast indeed.

I went to Wiki for that article and noticed this:

In 2001, Steve appeared in a cameo role in the Eddie Murphy film Dr. Dolittle 2. In 2002, his first feature film, The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course, was released. In general, reviews of this film were negative. However, in 2003, Irwin was reportedly in line to host a chat show on Australian network television. INCOG NITO IS A FATc*** that lives at KALGOS HOUSE #AUSQUAKE FOR MOREDETAILS The Irwins have two children: a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin (born 24 July 1998), and a son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin (born 1 December 2003). Their dog, Sui, from which their daughter's middle name was derived, died in June 2004. INCOG NITO IS A FATc*** that lives at KALGOS HOUSE #AUSQUAKE FOR MOREDETAILSINCOG NITO IS A FATc*** that lives at KALGOS HOUSE #AUSQUAKE FOR MOREDETAILSINCOG NITO IS A FATc*** that lives at KALGOS HOUSE #AUSQUAKE FOR MOREDETAILSINCOG NITO IS A FATc*** that lives at KALGOS HOUSE #AUSQUAKE FOR MOREDETAILS Under Steve's expansive leadership, the operations have grown to include the zoo, the television series, The Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, and International Crocodile Rescue. Improvements to his Australia Zoo include the Animal Planet Crocoseum, the rainforest aviary, and Tiger Temple.

Workmate checked like 10seconds after i did and didn't get it and i refreshed and it went away.

Pretty f***ed up.

From Wikipedia:

Dasyatids (eg. Sting Rays)

Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail). It is coated with a toxic venom. This gives them their common name of stingrays, but that name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray.

Dasyatids do not attack aggressively, or even actively defend themselves. When threatened their primary reaction is to swim away. However, when they are attacked by predators or stepped on, the barbed stinger in their tail is mechanically whipped up, usually into the offending foot; it is also possible, although less likely, to be stung "accidentally" by brushing against the stinger. Contact with the stinger causes local trauma (from the cut itself), pain and swelling from the venom, and possible infection from parts of the stinger left in the wound, as well as from seawater entering the wound. It is possible for ray stings to be fatal if they sever major arteries, are in the chest or pelvic region, or are improperly treated. Their stingers are normally ineffective against their main predator, sharks.

Sounds painful.

My kids loved watching him and his antics, they even have a signed book by his wife to them by name saying "Crocs Rule!" ect.., and this is no bulls***, the other day they were watching an episode on Fox and he was jumping into the ocean and diving and stuff and wrestling sea snakes and other nasties and I actually said to the wife, "The guy nuts, he's going to get himself killed one day" But to be honest I have also said that about Austin Stevens the South African snake guy on Fox as well.

But to clarify, I only said that because as far as I know he [Irwin] had zero expertise as a marine bilogist/expert and when he started to move his on shore skill into the ocean I started to get concerned. The ocean is a whole new ball game.

Even today a marine bilogist/expert is quated as saying,
Victoria Brims, a marine life expert from Oceanworld in Sydney, said the stingray that killed Irwin was most likely provoked.

"I am aware he was filming a documentary and his documentaries are usually very hands on. I can only assume that he had some kind of hands on or close contact with the animal who like us when we get afraid defended itself," Ms Brims said.

Still a sad day for anyone to lose a loved one and dad at such a young age, but probably the one consollation to his family and firends is that he died doing what he loved most.

R.I.P.

I heard today at uni. I got into my tute and started reading the instructions on the board and the last one was (p.s Steve Irwin is dead). I would have preffered to have found out another way :P.

Nevertheless ive read through all the news reports. Apparently theres not much chance a sting ray barb can actually pierce your chest and make it into your heart. Although a marine biologist was qouted on news.com.au as saying that a sting close to the heart could be fatal.

I always loved watching his daring encounters with crocs and the like.

Rest in Peace mate.

Gee wow, yeah no I think they were trying to give you an idea on the toxin's effect, to say that even if it didn't pierce the heart itself and missed all vital organs, the toxins from the barb would have likely done the job.

You know, as opposed to something like a fence paling which doesn't have that venom.

Stupidity is calling it stupid.

Humour is a perfectly acceptable coping mechanism. Hell, people probably made some (or all, idk) of those because they hate him. Big whoop ? I'm sure you've laughed at a michael jackson photochop somewhere, and I'm sure someone likes him. I just guess it's the other way around this time, eh.

Note: I didn't really like him that much, though I agree he has done quite a good deal of work preservation/animal related around the place. But I can also see the humour in what people have done, too.

EDIT: on the firefox thing, hmm yeah, same when I press / not in a form.

eXemplar,
Yea humour is a great coping mechanism for death but most of that isn't humour and if it is I think they've mostly missed their mark. Big whoop? ... yea sure people hate him but it's hardly the right time to express their hatred, just an opportunity to get attention. And yes I've laughed at a Michael Jackson photoshop ... but he's alive and he f@cks kids, hardley a comparison.

Steve may have been a reckless bogan, but his passion and energy for life should be admired and taken on board. Australia has now become less Australian.

Hmm I'd have to agree that he was a bit of an embarrassing knob really.

Sad what happened to him yes, but "Aussie Legend"? Nah. More of an American legend really, the whole Crocodile Hunter angle was always aimed at the yanks from the start (hence no-one here knew who the hell he was for most of the 90s) - just look at the reaction in the US..

Some girls at work were actually shedding tears, it's all getting a bit silly, methinks.

Yeah I didn't think he was an aussie legend because I enjoyed his movies. He did more for tourism and conservation than really pretty much anyone else I can think of.
A boring, unemotional, unexciting f***wit wouldn't be able to attract the interest and audience that Steve did. People don't pay attention to just anyone, you've got to have something special. He did, and instead of using it for his personal wealth and benefit, he gave it back.

The Animal Planet will rename the garden space in front of Discovery's world headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, to the "Steve Irwin Memorial Sensory Garden." They are also looking at the creation of the Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter Fund, which they will call "The Crikey Fund" which will "allow people from across the globe to make contributions in Steve's honour to support wildlife protection, education and conservation."

It's a nice idea, but "The Crikey Fund" kind of made me cringe.

That's true, but from the sounds of it the only people who were there at the time where workmates/friends and paramedics. Paramedics would lose their job if they did something like that, and I'm sure the other people who have tried to contact the family before they ran to the media.

But you never know...

a story here about the footage of his death

"It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up, and spiked him here (in the chest), and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone.

Lol, you're nobody to preach about caring about anybody else you don't know dale.
so stfu.

Also, enough of all this steve irwin was everybodies hero and kids are going to be waking up screaming for mummy and daddy and wetting the bed because steve is dead.
Or whatever that retarded segment was about, only caught enough to hear something along those lines.

Sure, it's sad and bad it happened but going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about it every waking minute of television and radio is just too much, no matter who it is.

i kinda hope it doesnt, no doubt fagnerds will edit it into a montage of hilarity with streetfighter characters, pokemon and zidane attacking steve (but then again, thats just their way of dealing with the tragedy, right?).

well, the idea is that death just isn't funny, especially when it strikes so close to home. steve was an idol to many of us without being a full-on idol, more just, if we could choose the people we wanted to live, he would definitely have been one because of what he represented.

give it time, sure it's not a big deal to you, but it is to many of us. i'm sure you'll feel just fine without making jokes, but the people you offend won't

i do try to be sensitive. so i don't crack jokes about it, but i also don't apologise for getting amusement out of the jokes i do hear

not even because "humour is my way of dealing with the pain etc etc" (a cop out and somewhat thoughtless when his relatives etc are enduring real pain) but because i just happen to have a dark sense of humour

it's important to realise it's not laughing "at" him, i still consider myself highly respectful of the man and sad at his death.

U didn't have to know him personally to know that he was a great human being who never meant anybody harm and loved life, animals, and his wife and kids to the max. He was a fantastic entertainer but more than that his entertainment really made a positive impact on the world - it wasn't just about building a scrooge mcduck money tower like every other celebrity out there.

Anyone who ever saw his show live, watched an interview of him, saw him on a talkshow, or just watched his Animal Planet series was better off for having done so.

Everyone was better off for having Steve Erwin alive - how many of u can say that about yourselves.

Some of you pricks are pathetic.

but where was all the people who "think hes great now" when he was getting into s*** for having his babie in the croc pen when he was performing a live show. thats when he could of really used some support, not now, now that hes DEAD!

in all seriousness, i thought he was a champ and a great aussie icon, i just wish he changed his outfit, bit of colour never hurt anyone.

either way, its kind of sad we dont have other australia icons like this around any more. and its kind of sad that all the kids these days are too emo looking to really stick there head down and become something others want to inspire to.

Most of us? Doubt it.. probably the minority "f***ing hated watching" his TV shows. I've heard millions of people worldwide loved his shows.

On the jokes thing - I think it's too soon and disrespectful to start making humour out of the situation, but I read a public forum so man up (nice saying Typo) you wangs, if you don't like reading it then don't come here.

I dont get this too soon bulls***. If you respect him then you respect him, whether it's today or in 10 years time. You can't just go from respecting him today being all emo and s*** to cracking jokes about him and his mum next week because you dont give 2 s***s anymore.

I think the Greer comment is terrible. If this happened to be any one else stung by a sting ray it would have been a tragety (sp??). Any way you look at it a man has tragically died.

This is not the time to be personally attacking a dead human being just to raise your own public profile. Especially when you are a dried up has been like Greer.

Germaine Greer is just showing how much of an insensitive bitch she really is.

People are looking too deep into Steve's death trying to make it into something that it is not. What they should be showing respect to the poor man and his family.

If you're going to get offended with what people say on the Internet, you just have to get off it. There are too many f***tards out there who have no self control, no respect for others, who go out of their way to bait and inflame people - you just can't get drawn into it. Karma'll catch up with the idiots eventually who are really malicious, because eventually they'll see the wrong thing in front of someone IRL. The rest of them are just attention whoring jerks that you just have to ignore.

I think more importantly everyone has their own opinions on every subject and not everyone had to like Steve even if you think so yourself.

I personally found watching his shows and interviews a little bit embarrasing due to his exuberance but I wouldn't say i hated the guy.

Sure it's sad he died but much as Kat said, i didn't know the guy but I have learned alot more about what hes done in death than when he was alive.

It's kinda sad to say it but now In death I have alot more respect for him than I ever did when he was alive mainly due to knowing more about what he has done due to media saturation (including forums).

I really didn't care about him one way or another when he was alive but I really do feel bad for his family much as I would for anyone who has lost a loved one so suddenly :/.

Nope; I wasn't referring to you (or anyone) in particular. I've been reading a lot of comments in various places about this issue, and this is pretty much par for the course. When someone famous dies the jokes are inevitable, regardless of whether they're tasteless or lame or stupid or not funny - they're going to come anyway.

If you get offended easily, the Internet is not for you - period. Especially anything that allows anything that allows for comments from users, because you're always going to get jerks. Even on places like news.com.au - they'll deliberately moderate jerk replies to encourage outrage from other users (...leading to more posts/views).

Speaking of jerk news agencies, it really annoys me when TV stations do their memorial stuff. If they were sincere about it they'd do those pieces with no ads - as long as they have ads, they're just ratings-grabbing scum.

Anyway, Internet 101 aside, I thought the 'Crikey' fund that they're setting up is an awesome idea. It's in the spirit of what Steve Irwin would have wanted and worked so hard to achieve. He was a top bloke.

I don't think it's right to say the internet isn't for you if you're easily offended. The simple fact is that the internet should be moderated so that we can enjoy the experience without being subject to satanic influences which gnaw at the very fabric of our society.

I'm very much against the idea of censorship and moderation of the internet. The internet for me is about everybody being able to have freedom of speech and expression. Sadly enough, most people choose to use that freedom to be dickholes. Ultimately I think it's the parents' role to moderate their children. When I was a kid, I didn't copy stupid things I saw in the media because I was taught not to. I also avoided picking fights and trying to upset people (in RL and on interwebs) because my parents taught me that people who do that are f***wits and nobody likes them. I think a lot of today's problems can be blamed on parents who don't teach their children how to behave.

Remember how long we had to listen to s***E about Princess Died?

I remember when a mate rang me up and told me she died, my immediate reaction was "cool!, now I don't have to see s*** s*** splattered about her on every f***ing waste of money womens rag"

little did I know it would keep going even after death

Aside from any google search information that may be gained, she thinks she is s*** hot and therefore her opinion is actually worthy. of course she is mistaken.

In regards to Germiane Greer.
If people have something to say, that is their right.
Some people just dont have enough common sense/sensitvity to realise that no matter what their personal opinion is, there is a time and place for voicing those opinions, and clearly when a family, a wife and two young kids are greiving over the loss of their son/brother/husband/father is not the time.

It was nice to see Toby on the Rock Star Supanova on Fox dedicated his encore song to Steve, with the Aussie flag in hand and all. I don't know how many have been folowing it but I reckon he is in with a chance of winning the whole shebang. He picked up a nice tricked out Honda SUV tonite for free.

I see the term 'SUV' slowly creeping it's way into the australian vernacular.

not much
a couple of cars in aus have actually had it decal'd on them from memory I think, but it didn't seem to take off

suv definitely feels yankee to me, not that that bothers me. I still think of them as 4wd's, or toy 4wd's if they're toy 4wd's

As for the whole SUV thing, I dont' really care about American English filtering into our own pure Australian form. People who cry out about Australian English being invaded and ruined by American English are f***wits. It's natural for language to flow and change. The only languages that don't change are DEAD LANGUAGES. E.g. Latin. Pun intended.
