Hey guys I've been losing psi out of one of my tyres for a while now due to s***ty chrome oxidising and f***ing up the seal on the tyre.
So the time has come to invest in a new set of mags for the skyline gts r33. I currently have 17" zongans on it which are basically cheap arse chrome thats causing all the issues. I was tempted to get another set of 17's just cause the rubber on the tyres is still pretty much new. http://www.leetbix.com/skyline/side.jpg Although after seeing 18's (koyas on back) and then 19's (advanti vapour on front) I'm seriously tempted to go 19's. http://www.leetbix.com/skyline/new_mags.jpg Which brings me to the question/s - by putting 19's on it i'll need to go from a 45 to a 35 profile tyre. Is that going to cause me issues when it comes to ride comfort (not really that big of an issue), more importantly risk damaging the mags? Another thing i'm not sure about is what to do with the tyres - they're Accelera Alpha 17 INCH 235/45R17 (Not sure if they're any good or not?) with as i said before still quite good tread on them. The tyre mob has offered me $150 for the tyres trade-in. Is it better to keep them and try to flog them off privately or is it not worth the hassle? I guess the same goes for the mags don't really think i can sell them on account of one of them being a bit dodgy. Thoughts? |

There shouldn't be any hassle in regards to ride comfort but the cost of rubber on the 19's might surprise you a bit. Imo biggest you should really aim for is perhaps 18's and seems you have quite a bit of room for lowering. 18's + lowering will look better than just putting 19's on it now. As for the tyres they are quite a popular size (Commodore SS 17" size) so if you were to hock them off I don't think you'd have a drama getting rid of them. As for the mag being a bit dodgy, fall in price can usually lessen the weight of such an issue for someone who just wants some ok mags for a while.

17s are as big as i'd ever go, and partially cause of what evis said
my tyres cost me $300, same tyres in 18s and 19s were hundreds of dollars more. forget paying $2k for tyres. i also reckon 17s look better anyway. |

I got 35 profile tyres on my 19's, and they turn and ride just as good as the standard 16's did.
Get 19's, but as whoop said get the black ones, chrome is gayer then nf's poor ass 32. |

Thanks for the info guys. Pretty much decided on the vapours - they're not chrome they're a black insert/machined finish. I know its hard to see in my s***ty phone pic :P. Heres the medusa with the same finish. (I prefer these but i'm cursed with 4 stud :()
http://www.capitaltyres.co.nz/Images/Mags/41.jpg Any idea how much I can sell 4 dodgy 17" mags for :P? Just wondering if its worth trying to transport them from the tyre mob. (it'd be an ordeal due to having to borrow a trailer etc) |

I don't see how 19" would make that much difference when it comes to lowering?
Considering 18" with 40 profile are the same size diameter as 19" 35's? |

Stick with 18's at the most, and spend the savings on better rubber. Anyway, even 17's look plenty big enough on an R33 with the appropriate ride height.
PS: if you want some high quality rims, I'm selling my Volk TE37's in the near future and they will fit your car (4x114.3). Get more forged JDM tyteness yo. |

If you like the 19's and can afford the rubber, then get them.
Really the only important factors are, your preference, how they affect the cars handling and how much cash you have. 17"s with lowering or 18"s with lowering will be cheaper in the long run. But that also depends how long rubber lasts for you and how long you intend of keeping the car. If you compare at Maxe's group (well some of them) and BJ. Maxe's group tend to try to save the cash as they can't afford it. While BJ runs 19"s and doesn't complain in the slightest, he also doesn't use his rubber as fast as they would. Having 2 sets is also good if you keep a set for track (if you stick to the road rules etc.. you'll use less rubber). So look at your options, look at how much cash you want to spend, now and in the future. Good luck :D |

Whats "good" rubber? /nub What i'm curious about it what makes good rubber? Whats the difference - better handling etc? I've been quoted about 2.5k for those 19" with "budget rubber"? The tyres I've got on atm are Accelera Alphas.. which i'm assuming they're budget rubber too and i've never had any problems with them. |

The difference between bad and good rubber you probably wont notice on the street
If you dont drive like an idiot it shouldnt matter too much what kind of rubber you buy, as long as you have a lot of it (225+) |

Thanks maxe thats the sort of reply i was after. I've currently got 235/45/17" on atm and like i said i haven't noticed any problems. I don't seem to chew through rubber quickly. Had the car since jan and the tyres are still in good shape.
I guess i'll just stick with "budget rubber" as it seems to work for me. Whats a good lifetime of a set of tyres? |

Fizzer, the difference with the rubber is usually how it handles in adverse conditions (rain, mud, dirt, hard braking). Which can effect the lifetime of the tyres also.
What kind of driver are you? Foot to the floor? Or just a casual with the odd little hoon? This is the major factor of tyre life (and of course things like distance, weight of the vehicle, suspension used, what roads you travel on). Probably best way to see is if you can find some people with difference sets of tyres and taking their car for a drive in the dry/wet and seeing if it makes a big difference to you. Just don't crash their cars :D nf, how is that relevant to the topic? Ohh ahh you made my opinion less by stating that my first car was a civic that had some issues (very good, I have a new car now). But even better, you back it up with a comment on my height! Awesome work! At least use something relevant, you know like I work for a particular tyre company or performance shop that gets kick backs on sales. Grow up, stick to the topic. |

Gee, 15k. I thought I was hard on tyres.
In my corolla, I got 24k out of a set of tyres, and they weren't new when I got them, they were secondhandies. On the taxis, we get about 40k-50k out of a set. And they are $70 tyres Never pay over $100 a corner for tyres unless you plan on getting over 40k out of them. I run Dunlop's on my Falcon (215/60/R16) and i expect to get about 45k out of them. |

I run BFGoodrich tyres (nfi why those particular ones, might've been recommended by Subaru) on my slow assed Liberty and have to get new ones after like 8months :(
Given how much the clutch on it suxx (been replaced under warrenty by Subaru 4 or 5 times) I'm just gonna assume this is their fault too :p |

I manage to get ~450km from the 55L tank each time I fill up, so I'm not driving too hard. Dropped it in for service today and having the wheels alligned, so hopefully that'll help.
Question for you guys, do low profile tyres wear faster/slower/the same as normal profile tyres? |

low profile tyres can often tend to have a faster wearing (more grippy) compound due to the fact that they're more often used by people seeking a performance tyre. But it's not a rule.
Many tyres have temperature, traction and/or tread wear ratings on them in addition to the standard markings. These are a good tool to go by if looking for a particular type of compound. You can find out everything you want to know about tyre nomenclature here: http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html |

Holy crap! I'm flat out getting 30k out of a set of Potenza RE030's or something like that. It's true that good performance tyres have much softer compounds thus wear quicker. Am using Firestone mid level atm and they are wearing heaps less then the Potenza's however there nowhere near as grippy.

I'd classify myself as a casual hoon :P Usually got the lil lady in the car and she's somewhat adverse to me thrashing it. But on the odd occaision i'll drop the clutch and give it a chirp. How would people rate Acclera Alphas on the cheap/good tyre scale? Thats what have been on the car when i got it in january and i've prolly done about 12,000k's on it and they've still got a s***load of tread on them. So ppl buy expensive tyres moreso for the added handling not to get more life out of their tyres? Also can someone answer my question from before.. someone said that 19" rims make it hard to lower? How is this so given that a 17" 45 tyre is the same diameter as a 19" 35? |

How would people rate Acclera Alphas on the cheap/good tyre scale? Without knowing those tyres specifically, they certainly sound like a budget tyre. So ppl buy expensive tyres moreso for the added handling not to get more life out of their tyres? Yes and no. Handling isn't just about driving fast. There are other important factors like: Braking - s*** tyres provide s*** braking. not what you want in an emergency. Wet weather traction - s*** tyres are more prone to aquaplaning, which is obviously very bad. Then cheap tyres *may* have other problems, like uneven tread wear, cracking and/or hardening, etc. So people pay extra for the piece of mind. |

Ive run federal 595s are they are a really nice tyre.
Got some maxxis 18" ones, they go quite nicely. But for a good middle ranged priced tyre, i would definately choose federal. |

yeah they aren't bad tyres. the rubber isn't anything special to be honest, but they run a very grippy tread pattern. no water channels, and a uni-directional tread pattern makes it not so good in the wet, but hello, we live in brisbane, so dry performance is probably a bit more relevant.
you don't pay for name either. last edited by nF at 22:10:07 31/Jul/06 |

Yes and no. Handling isn't just about driving fast. There are other important factors like: I love my tyres. I paid lots for them and they stop well in emergencies, they don't lose it round corners (unless I'm being an absolute moron) and even in the wet they give excellent grip. The tyres on my dad's car however are utter s*** and tend to lose grip if you even look at the brake pedal. They need replacing but the hell with it until I can be bothered finding some relatively cheap mags for it. |

yer, all true
my old falkens were totally haddit, would spin up in 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the wet, thats not fun got em replaced and the new tyres made a world of difference to everything i was half paranoid about driving my car in the end before i got them replaced |

Fizzer your tyres should last a decent amount of time as long as you're just a normal hoon. Just talk to the tyre specialist because each set of tyres has a different set of abilities (some are awesome in the wet, but suck for high speeds while others are crap in the wet but stick like glue in the dry).
So talk to them and aim for some that are good in the wet, and handle well in the dry, but I doubt you'll need ones that need to do 240km/h+ (these are more expensive). You shouldn't need anything too soft, they just cost more and only really benifit you if you're going for track days or own a merc. I work with a guy who has a SLK Merc, his tyres have a life spand of 15k, and rotation at 7.5k. They were so damn soft, but you could tell how much difference they made in the dry. Well good luck with it man, you should be fine with what you choose, you are at least taking the time to find out unlike the avg. idiot these days. last edited by LightAssassin at 15:07:48 02/Aug/06 |

LightAssassin: you mentioned a few pages back that 19's will make it harder to lower? Can you explain this a bit more?

a bigger wheel leaves less room in the guards for suspension travel, then you start getting issues with scrubbing/alignment
but dont listen to me, Im an ex-nerd circle-jerker |

if that really is the only thing you have to show in your life you must be a sad lonely man (still renting the shed from your mum hey?).What was that about a circle jerk? You idolise that moron so much you even start to emulate his poor excuse for insults. |

What maxe said is correct. You can still lower it, but not as much. Though it does depend on how low you wish to go, and how much you want to spend on suspension gear to suit.
One of my mate with an R33 went from 17"s to 18"s, you could notice the extra height, but he is happier for it as he doesn't scrape his exhuast half as often. He did notice it is slightly more boat like in corners, but he accepts the comprimise. So depending where you drive (speed bumps, high drive ways etc..), and what kind of handling you want will effect that. I see no problem with 19"s, they sure do look nice (BJ's S15 is proof of that, and it still drives like a dream). My mates R33 with 18"s with standard suspension shows how it can change the handling, however only a small amount. If you like the 19"s and intend on lowering it anyway, you might aswell get them instead of the 18"s, sure you'll be a little bit higher, but in day to day efforts that doesn't matter much (just don't expect to be drift king haha). I'd also suggest you head over to skylines australia and nissansilvia.com, both have some awesome threads here and there (you have to find them usually, and wade through the bulls***). There are some awesome guys who've been racing and tuning cars since before I was born heh. Also, are you using stock suspension? planning to change it if you do? Handling matters heaps in my opinion, ever seen a car with half the power of the other out do the more powerful one through the corners? It's a beautiful thing to see :D Now having power and handling, most beautiful thing in the world :D |

I work with a guy who has a SLK Merc, his tyres have a life spand of 15k, and rotation at 7.5k. not counting track days I probably would have got at most 20k out of my tyres. the car came with 4 brand new Dunlop Le Mans on it and they've been complete s***. they aren't even sport tyres (not directional), so they grip like s*** in the dry, utter s*** in the wet, and their durability fell way short of making up for it. If you like the 19"s and intend on lowering it anyway, you might aswell get them instead of the 18"s, sure you'll be a little bit higher what the hell are you talking about? different diameter rims shouldn't affect your overall diameter too much otherwiseyour speedo will be out by a lot. as you go up in rim size you go down in profile to compensate. there might be some change in overall diameter if you can't get a width/profile to suit, but it won't affect ride height. check out: http://www.rochfordtyres.co.uk/tyrecalc.asp |
