Since we haven't had too many gaming threads lately i thought i'd ask people to post some of their most enjoyable single player gaming experiences.

I just finally finished Ninja Gaiden on the xbox and holy gronks that was one of the best if not best 33 hours i ever wasted.

Go.

Doom 3 was about 5+ years behind the times with regard for game-play, narrative, plot, suspension and enjoy-ability, within an FPS environment. Outside FPS it is a decade behind the times.

It just isn't that good of a game. There are a couple of awesome moments in it, but not enough to say it was a great game.

those are both nice opinions. but the topic wasn't 'what constitutes a great game'... it's 'most enjoyable sp'. & i know heeeeps of people that loved the doom3 experience. i really enjoyed doom3 & doom3:resurrection of evil even moreso. i would have said doom3/d3:roe for my most enjoyable single player experience as well... but then there was oblivion.

All the Splinter Cells (raaar 4 please)
Tales of Phantasia/Tales of Eternia (jRPG fans must play these)
The Incredible Machine
Devil May Cry 3 (fantastic combat system, beats God of War in every single regard and rivals Ninja Gaiden at every step)
Bauldur's Gate 1+2 & Planescape Torment
Yoshi's Island
Mario RPG series
Shadow of the Colossus
MGS 1-3
I use to really love the old adventure games like sam and max, grim fandango, full throttle. Also for some queer reason I loved anachronox.

I actually quite enjoyed halo (once it came to PC) single player. I guess, it's not my favourite, as duke nukem 3d would have to be my fav over all.

next ones on the list would be Max Payne, Halflife 1 & 2, Quake 1 and GTA:III.

For a single player game to be good, you have to be able to go back in to it and enjoy it over again or it has to have immensely long playing time or 'starting again' must have positives.

Titles from the past that i'd list as best single player experience (excluding games that had good single player but the most fun was had split-screen or multiplayer):

Amok (v20)
Bruce Lee (c64)
Pitfall 2 (c64)
Raid Over Bungling Bay (c64)
The Last Ninja (c64)
Questron 2 (c64)
Great Giana Sisters (c64)
Ultima 5 (c64)
Eye of the Beholder (PC)
Ultima 7 (pc)
Civilization (pc)
Wolf 3D (pc)
GTA 1 & 2

Going forward from there most games i've liked have been multiplayer or the single player component didn't last more than a few weeks.

For well over six months now i've been addicted to Civilization 4. Every month it gets renewed interest when civfanatics.com release the "Game Of The Month" and i get back in to it, discussing strategies with guys at work. GoTM's are a save game start point, that everyone plays and you can discuss strategies since everyone has the same starting point. I believe the next Gotm is out this weekend, if anyone is interested.

Edit: added in GTA 1&2. I notice lots of comments on doom/duke etc, but these i played predominantly multiplayer so aren't in my best single player list.

DOOM II, enough said, no game before or after it, truely was designed to kick your arse... I played it through in like 4-5 days. Straight days mind, back in the day when little things like an education would be put on hold to save the earth from hell spawn.

I can still remember thinking to myself as yet more s*** spawned after I'd just spent 30 minutes laying waste to everything, there can't be any more surely, then more s*** would spawn, hundreds of the buggers...

Truely a classic single player experience.

1. Thief 1&2. Definately the most immersive and nail-baiting game I've ever played.

2. Doom II. For the reasons mentioned above.

3. AvP Gold. Crappy renders, but man... that game really laid the smaq down.

4. Half-Life 1. duh

5. Serious Sam 1st & 2nd Encounter. Great fun, silly game, doom stylez.

6. Starcraft. rly

7. Dungeon Keeper 2. Lotsa fun.

8. System Shock2. This really was an under-rated classic.

9. Max Payne. Da Pillz kept me playin'

10. Deus ex. Non-Linear ++

Hrm, tis odd that people interpret that idea of 'Best single player experiance' as the title of a game and instead of an experiance..

My fav moment was playing Doom 1 map 1. Hearing the voices/sounds of various monsters nearby, plus the lighting and split levels. OMG that was excelent.

Also taking on the world in CIV during the later game, wear I had tanks, carriers and advanced transports and the rest of the world had triemes. Ooo the good times.

O also playing Golden Axe with a good friend. Kicking those little theiving gnome things heehheh...

this is qgl & the subject is gaming... i expect no less! ;D

gotta larf at the people that list wolf3d as thier 'most enjoyable single player experience'... do you guys not remember the tedious running up against a wall mashing the space bar?!? the near endless rooms of brown shirts, blue shirts & white shirts... yawn. sure the game was an fps classic... but if that what ya call 'most enjoyable' you have a far greater attention span than me!

I find with games, it's usually not a single moment or a short period of time that really makes the game great - it's the entire experience. That being said here are some of the cool moments I remember

STARCRAFT
- When Kerrigan gets swarmed over by the Zerg
- When Kerrigan hatches out of her Zerg egg thingo

PLANESCAPE TORMENT
- When some lady offers to pay you money to let her kill you, and you accept :)

ZELDA:OCARINA OF TIME
- When you leave the village at the start of the game, and truly see how huge the world actually is, walking across the field to the castle.
- When time has "stopped" in the castle, and everything is black and white

RESIDENT EVIL 4
- Home alone, at night, in the dark, playing RE4. I was fighting the monsters that you need to target with your sniper rifle using infrared vision and then shoot the "soft points". I was just about to shoot the last one and his freakin arms stretched out across the room, grab me and pulled me into his body then out of his body all these SPIKES JABBED OUT! I screamed like a little girl, and turned my Gamecube off, then I put all the lights on.

Oh yeah definately Metal Gear Solid 1 on the playstation. Man when i got up real far and ended up getting caught and tortured by Revolver while telling me "if you die there are no more conintues after this, you are going to die forever" or something and i was seriously treating it like a life or death situation aha.

Oh and switching the controller on the 2nd port so that weird seedy mask dude couldn't read your mind.

Oh and spilling the tomatoe sauce in the jail cell to make snake look like he's dead then doing a pow pow on the guard coming through.

Oh and using the stinger to target Metal Gear at the end.

Oh and the one on one sniping against sniper wolf.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... so many good memories.

Resident Evil 1 had many great and scary moments...the first time the giant spiders appeared in that hallway freaked the s*** outta me.

One of the things that sticks in my mind the most though was when we first got the game, I lived in a duplex and right next door there was a young family. Their little boy was about 3 or 4 years old and he would often toddle over and want to play the playstation. We fired up Resident Evil and the intro has (if you remember) a soldier looking back horrified as something is chasing him and the scene ends with a big splat of blood and a menacing voice booming "RESIDENT EVIIIIIL". The look on junior's face? priceless.

He wasn't too keen on playstation for a while after that and every time we would play we would make us promise not to put "the scary game".

For single player gaming experience, not a lot beats the good ol' snes RPG's. Secret of Mana/Evermore, Illusion of Time, Terranigma, BOF2 etc had me getting up at 4 in the morning so I could cram in a couple of hours before school. No game since the time of the SNES has made me do that. Nuff said.

Fallout 1 + 2 (I don't think anyone's mentioned them yet!!!)
I hear you mate - both were fantastic, but it was the soundtrack from the original that won me over. The feeling of invunerability the 1st time I put on a suit of powerarmour or found the alien blaster (easter egg) in Fallout 2...

Others from my list:
C&C (the original)
Quake I & II
Dues Ex
Operation Flashpoint
Halflife
Descent II
Rise of the Triad <--- remember the drunken rocket launcher & spinning blade/moving pillar traps? :)
Max Payne I
Commander Keen 4 <--- iD's most successful platformer?
Diablo I & II
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
...plus many more I can't think of right now!

Yeah lots of hours was spent on tekken 3 trying to master all the moves in practice mode with most of the charatcers against a hard opponet.

Tenchu on the ps was good at the time, but just the other day i hired the latest tenchu on xbox and man that sucked.

Yeah first time i played him i thought he was mega hard but once you figure out his pattern of attacks he's easy, like any boss (eventually).

What you do is you circle around him dodging all his shots and once you get close throw a few slashes. You can tell when he's about to do his grab move with his delayed movement. As long as you're close to him he wont take shots at ya but he'll always try and grab ya. So just roll out the way of the grab then you'll have enough time to pound him.

Also before going up to meet him max out on any health potions from the shop and dont be afraid to use the wheels of fire ninpo when you're up close for extra damage.
