First google managed to get its products bundeled with Dell machines and now google does this:

Although it's still considered a work in progress, Google's online spreadsheet will offer consumers and businesses a free alternative to Microsoft's Excel application -- a product typically sold as part of the Office software suite that has been a steady moneymaker for years.
Rest of the story here..

although i cant see buisness being happy to store there spreadsheets online

as far as i see, google is exploiting their 'good-guy' image and it wont be long before people see that they are just as money hungry as microsoft when they take over the world!

in the end, google's stuff is still free.. i dont care if they put an add at the top of the website... If you obtain a 'free' copy of windows XP, you get popups reminding you of the fact you own a 'free' copy every 10 seconds. GoogleOS would sooo dominate. I'll be interested to see how good this online spreadsheet actually is.

Google are just as evil as microsoft and just as intent as monopolising their corners of the market.

I don't have any problem with open office? At least it's legally free and lets face it, I'm not going to go buy ms office just to open that silly little .pps someone sends me in an email or that .doc some f***** put on the internet instead of converting it to PDF.

I must admit that the MS Office .doc compatibility isn't 100% and hence I wouldn't hand in an important assignment done in OpenOffice (unless exported to PDF) due to the chance that it might look different on the other end.

But other than that, what do you honestly have against it? It looks great and much of its functionality is similar if not identical to MS Office.

And with that you've ensured that I will never, ever try it.

Why would someone say that there's a reason something is free, if they're not implying that the reason is because its s***?

Your loss. Have fun activating (or pirating) MS Office.

that's the thing though - implying something is free because it's s***, doesn't imply that everything free is s***. that's why I asked what language you speaky

It was implied that it was s*** because it was free, not the other way around - and yes, it kinda implies that everything free is s***

nah it wasn't

not: "openoffice is s*** because it's free" as you claim
but rather: "there is a reason openoffice is free... it's cos it's s***"

...which means that his comment doesn't imply, in any way, that everything free is s***.

and he could have been insinuating that the reason open office is free is because its open source, or produced by pro-open source groups.

why must everyone jump to conclusions!@

I reckon you could replace Apple with Google in those Apple ads that were posted a while ago and it would have pretty much the same meaning. IE, Google aps are much more user friendly and appeals more to the person who sits at home on their arse and uses the computer now and then.

Lets see, to buy a stand-alone version of excel 2003 will set you back approx. $370. I've used Open Office pretty much since it released, and it works just as well and some times when I use machines (at work) with Excel, I miss OO.

Fair call on the .doc's though, I'm totally with whoop, unless your planning on pirating MS office, OO is very well sufficient.

That's not the only thing Google is doing, this "Google Online Spreadsheet" (props to slashdot.org) will definitely give something for microsoft to think about

Please explain why you don't like Open Office ?

It dead set rocks my world. Its cheap, its fast, it works, its very compatible (not 100% nor will it ever be). But given the vast majority of word users use maybe 10% of the functionality .. its more then enough. Built in PDF support, ability to save to the MS formats.

It even opens some corrupted MS Office Documents that blue screen the MS products.

And it has some big Fortune 500 supporters now.

Also ... the price

MS Office is expensive.
To the point where large companies put on multiple programmers to work on Open Office for the cost of their MS Office licence cost...

I would have to agree with Obes here (omg). Office is damn expensive and I know of a few old customers that used open office because they refused to pay for microsoft office and we refused to installed pirated software on their machines.

Yep totally agree with this one. Many people owed me a few beers because I recovered the supposedly "corrupted" documents as reported by MS Word yet open fine in OO and once I saved it in MS Word format, it works just fine in MS word.

Never had a problem with firefox. Oh wait once I went to a geocities site and it didnt work. Damn.

I have on the otherhand had f***loads of malware installed through the awesome power of IE.

Open Office is good if you just want to put in a few spreadsheets and have a word processor and powerpoint files. If you wanna do thousands of caculations MS Excel is way better, but then again you should prolly go buy a server and some programmers. :P

If you're doing graphic layouts in word, you should be hung.

Spreadsheets on the internets would be awesome, that way we wouldnt have users complaining OMG wher the f*** is our VPN dialin is teh lame! Which it is, but screw you guys, thats right im talking to you spook.
