http://maps.google.com

No directions or location searching yet, but I reckon it'd be on the way.

google maps is infinitly better becuase the map box is pretty much full screen where as where is has a tiny viewable area.

...that can be maximised or minimised as required, and also a "printer friendly" option for those on the run.

google earth doesn't do streets. i.e. my home in canberra is two years old, so not on the googleearth of canberra, just a empty field. overlaying google maps on it i can see where my house is. in googlemaps you just click 'hybrid' on the right to do the overlay. pretty nifty

additionally, it's using very up-to-date maps, showing future roads too.

Yeah, the house I'm moving to only had the roads sealed about a month ago, yet they're on the map and so are all the property divisions.

I wonder where they get their cadastral information from...
I know the Queensland cadastral data (the DCDB) can be bought (Both digital and printouts) and has been available for ~10 years from NR&M.

It seems to have pretty decent accuracy for free information aswell.
It's not @ Survey level, but it's enough for developers who would normally have to buy plans...

sorry, cant edit, but:

why not use google earth its much better then google maps

They are interchangable though. Click on hybrid, and you get a combined satellite/map image.

You can punch in google earth co-ordinates, and convert it to a street address. Stalkers paradise really :D

whereis is crap for maps lately (for us anyway). You can't zoom or anything

whereis always seems to lead me on a winding journey. I tried to get to a friends house and whereis took me up the bloody motorway, up some other road, down some side streets, in effect running me around in a circle, when a much easier, more direct albeit probably slightly longer way exists. By more direct I mean, not driving north, then east, then south, then east, then north then west, just head south, then east and I'm there.

wtfwhereis?

whereis maps used to kick arse, then for some reason they must have switched map companies or something cause now their maps look like they were painted by a spastic

google maps are awesome, can't wait for directions to be enabled

well I can, but you know what I mean

Whereis doesn't do google-style panning, so they can bite me :D

For street directions I recommend RACQ Travel Planner

It has worked in the past for me, without going up down and everywhere to get to my desitination.

This was for whoop (or whoever got led astray by whereis).

Whereis used to rock, that is until they changed it so you could only pan a certain amount from where you searched =\

For the same reason as whoop, I used to prefer spotting a location, then back tracking to a landmark I knew the best/easiest route to get to first.
Travel planners don't take into account roads that have f***ed up traffic lights that stay green for 3 seconds and so on.
