BulkBuyer.com.au has just put together a deal to get the Dell 24" Widescreen monitors, 2405FPW, for AUS$1020 delivered including 3 year NBD warranty. This is about a $300 discount on current Dell deals.

just thought people here might like to know about the deal going on.

What's the refresh on those guys?

Saw that Dell have 19" LCDs on sale atm for $399 but they're 20ms which (I'm told) sux

edit: oh, I can click on the link and find out for myself:

16ms ( black to white )
12ms ( grey to grey )

I think they list it at 16ms?
although the missus has a 4ms Samsung panel next to this one and I cant tell the difference in fps games.

Out of all my pc purchases over the years, I'd rate this monitor the best one. Do it! ;)

Apparently Dell are clearing off these monitors in order to bring out the new 2407fpw monitor which has HDCP support. The 20 and 30" versions is already out.

Exellent deal you have there though, i might look into it

What's this NBD warranty thing?

My friend wants to buy that particular 24" LCD but can't find much useful information about their dead-pixel warranty. All I found on the Dell site was:
A display with 1 to 5 fixed pixels is within the industry standards, and is therefore considered an acceptable display

(Link)

If that's the case, that truly sucks.

Until my friend can come across something more positive in terms of a dead-pixel warranty, I'm going to suggest to him to stay away. Having an LCD with even a single dead pixel is annoying as hell, regardless of where it is on the monitor.

Dell have some 15 day satisfaction policy where you can return no questions asked.

Any questions about the panel I'd guess you would find answers for over at whirlpool.

BoBa, we had the 30" for $2550 just a few weeks ago, but I reckon give it a few more months wnd we'll get a better price. It's still to new for Dell to show us much love on it.

We needed 200 orders by next friday for this deal to happen and we're already over 125 so it's definately a goer. Thanks for the pimpage Natslovr.

Guys just a heads up to people who might be wanting this monitor and using Vista in the future.

Okay, so there are reasons to upgrade still. For example, XP won't support HD-DVD or Blu-Ray; you'll need Vista for that. But in order to placate the piracy-paranoid MPAA, Microsoft had to put in a feature called PVP-OPM. Essentially, PVP-OPM means you have to have an HDCP (High-Definition Copy Protection) compliant monitor and an HDCP-compliant video card. If you have practically any LCD with DVI currently on the market today, it won't work; you'll have to buy a new one to run Vista. If you don't, you'll get a message that says "Monitor Revoked" and you won't be able to see anything on your screen. In other words, if you just dropped $1000 on a Dell 2405FPW, you'll have to upgrade to the HDCP-compliant 2407FPW to run Vista. I'm sure Dell will be happy to get your money a second time.

another public service announcement....

for the full article check out the 'So you wanna run Vista? thread I started.

I cannot believe that HDCP s*** won't get hacked. Or you could just not install Vista, which by all reports is going to be f***ing phatware anyway. I'll be f***ed if I'm upgrading to an OS that makes me buy a whole new PC just to run it, let alone a new monitor.

I don't think Ubuntu requires HDCP either.

But will it run hdcp protected content at full quality?
Isnt it the actual media that requires an HDCP compliant system?

And vista doesnt require HDCP monitors, the HDCP content does, so if you dont care about that it wouldnt affect you, would it? I'm sure you could run games and apps quite happily on vista without a HDCP monitor.

I'm looking at it this way, Vista is a long way away, the 2407 at prices i can afford is a long way away. When i need a hdcp monitor, if it hasn't been hacked, i'll buy one then, but i don't use my PC for watching movies anyway.

I'm in on this current deal, just hope the 3 weeks delivery is an over estimation.

There has already been progress, assuming this paper isn't out of date:

"A Cryptanalysis of the High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection System"

http://apache.dataloss.nl/~fred/www.nunce.org/hdcp/hdcp111901.htm

HDCP's linear key exchange is a fundamental weaknesses. We can:

* Eavesdrop on any data
* Clone any device with only their public key
* Avoid any blacklist on devices
* Create new device keyvectors.
* In aggregate, we can usurp the authority completely.

thats a good price, might get my brother in on this one. im still rocking my dual 2405's from the first whirlpool buy, no problems at all. i had a slight problem with the side of winamp burning into one corner, but it went after a few days.. amazing screens..

i would love to have the 30" dell the size is just nuts, but it has none of the extra features of the 2405, ie. the component inputs etc. main reason i bought the monitors early was for high def tv and in wait for the ps3/xbox360... the 30" dell is a dudd...

applor just so you know, wc3/ft doesn't do widescreen :)

I'll give anyone buying one of these a tip. First thing I ran was RA2 with the res cranked via the config file. Rocks so hard.
