Hey guys,
I would like to get my xbox up and running on my network, im looking for an adapter that plugs into the ethernet port and connects to my wireless (passworded - so i need to be able to configure) network. Been checking around a few places http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/reviews/article.php/3112421 http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/reviews/article.php/3489841 My drama is that my xbox is a hardware modded xbox, with two chips for xbox live(not that i actually play xbox live). The first article mentions about it updating my xbox to permenantly staying updated and making it harder for modders. Has anyone had any experience with wireless modded xboxes? Whats the setup like? Ill mainly be using it for streaming files off my network computers (cus the dvd drive in the xbox is f***ed and doesnt like certain files) so it needs to be 104mps (my 54mps laptop is freakin useless). Spook? you seem to know about xbox modding! but yours is softmodded so you might be too soft to handle this....;) Thanks for the help guys! Edit: Make more sense now? |

Im not sure I followed your post right, but you dont need to "Mod" your xbox to have wireless.
Just plug in one of these.... http://www.oztechnologies.com/detail.asp?ID=440 Mine works sweet. I have one to the xbox and one linking each end of the house network. |

Cat 5 patch lead plugs into the Xbox's ethernet port, and then into the bridge. The bridge links up with your current AP and you can use it with WEP or WPA.
Very very simple to use, and basicly, its just a big cat5 but not :P |

If you're after a 108Mbps wireless bridge, try the D-Link DWL-G810.

wifey has decreed, no cat5 cables in our new place :( Fine, either use CAT6 or upgrade to a new wifey that's more compatible with your network. |

Ok so a network bridge will link my ethernet and extend the network from that point? My room is encased in brick, and thus wireless from my room to half way in the house is s***. I would have the xbox in the next room (behind brick still) would it increase my laptops connectivity? http://www.netgear.com.au/products/prod_details.asp?prodID=263 - this any good? I have a netgear router, and id rather stick with the same brand, probably wont make any difference but. Fine, either use CAT6 or upgrade to a new wifey that's more compatible with your network. lol! |

yeah it's easy guys, just get a wireless bridge. stop making things hard for yourselves.
altho in your case spook owning the house you should wire the place with cat6 with outlets scattered around the place going back to patch panels in a small cabinet in a cupboard. That way not only can you put network to anywhere, you can run phone through them as well. |

Just get the bridge you dont need anything else. You are making a mountain out of a mole hill :)
The difference between 54 and 108 is about f*** all... don't expect any major changes. |

Ok a bridge connects just the xbox to the wireless network, but an access point will extend the range of the network?
If i were to get the access point, would it extend my network reliably? even through brick? The wireless seems to work ok when im out of my room, just not in it - which is annoying because its where i want to use my laptop. |

I, too, am joining the ranks of the xbox media centre junkies very soon.
A few questions: 1. It seems like you guys are fans of using a bridge. Is this the simplest and cheapest method to connect two pcs (connected atm through a crossover cable/network cards) to an xbox (which I plan to buy, chip and set up as a media player)? Can I use a hub? 2. Currently I run a simple network using main pc with xp and other one has 98. I am planning to get a copy of xp to put on the other puter. I have noticed that if I run a vid from main pc to other, it lags and pauses etc. Would having both machines running xp be better? Would this be less of a problem if I went wireless? I have a friend who has a wireless network setup and streams stuff without any problems. 3. Should I run one pc as a dedicated server ie. one machine with minimal progs on it and all my media stored on a couple of big hdds? Would this alleviate the network bugging out? 4. What type of media player do you guys use? PS I know jack about xboxes so you'll have to excuse my cluelessness here, but is xbox live worth setting up/paying for. I highly doubt I would use it as I have a healthy pc at the ready but ya never know. Basically all I really want to do is set it up so I can stream media from pc to xbox. I don't care about xbox games etc. Is the best way to do this a wireless router? Will simply connecting via crossover produce lagging? How long will Bert last on Family Feud? Burning questions... thx, xbox noob |

1. It seems like you guys are fans of using a bridge. Is this the simplest and cheapest method to connect two pcs (connected atm through a crossover cable/network cards) to an xbox (which I plan to buy, chip and set up as a media player)? Can I use a hub? A wireless bridge will connect a device to a already active wireless network, wether it be via a wireless router or plain access point. It's to be used where cables can't. You will need a wireless router/access point to use this. Most routers come with a 4 port switch so you can ditch the cross over cable and run everything through that instead. An Access point will only have 1 port to connect it to the network , keep that in mind - Depends if you want to seperate everything 2. 98 is a pos compared to XP. 98 will not be able to pump out anywhere near max throughput of 100mbit, so that;s probably why it gets slow and jerky. Ditch 98, no one uses it anymore, put XP on and watch the improvment. You can stream DVD's over 54mbit wireless so as long as the network is setup properly it will be fine, wireless or wired, make sure it's runing at it's best and it will be fine. 3. Should I run one pc as a dedicated server ie. one machine with minimal progs on it and all my media stored on a couple of big hdds? Would this alleviate the network bugging out? You can do that if you like, depends on how many people are going to be using this one PC and how much bandwidth it can put out and how much bandwidth you intend on using. Wireless output will be significantly less than wired so you need to make that choice. 4. What type of media player do you guys use? Windows Media Player is fine. Basically all I really want to do is set it up so I can stream media from pc to xbox. I don't care about xbox games etc. Is the best way to do this a wireless router? Will simply connecting via crossover produce lagging? How long will Bert last on Family Feud? Wired is always better than Wireless, wireless is just more convenient sometimes. If you can hard wire the xobox, do that, if not, try wireless. |

While obes is being a tool, I did say that i wanted to play burnt backup dvds of movies etc through my computer dvd drive over the network cus the xbox one is s***house, and doesnt read certain burnt dvds very well. But if i replace the dvd drive on my xbox it means i cant play xbox games :( last edited by Fireblood at 18:51:19 27/Mar/06 |

I run a NetGear adapter thingie plugged into my Xbox for XBMC streaming and the only thing I can stress to you is that you need to get 54Mbps *AT LEAST*.
11Mbps access points will not cut it and you will spend half the time watching a stuttering movie as it tries to keep the throughput up and going. Also, obviously the further away the xbox is from your access point and the amount of walls in between will impact on speed as well. If you also want to run something like MythTV streaming your recordings, 54Mbps is barely enough.. try to get one of the 108Mbps wireless setups. |

I feel the need to post the obligatory do not ever in your insane mind buy from Gamedude. Sure buy blank floppies or blank CDs and other meaningless crap that when fails you don't care but don't buy something that you may need after-sales support for.

dude my daughters are 3 rooms away watching "Hi 5 - Star Dreaming" as I type eh. Granted - the s***ty old laptop they're using for the job is an old Pentium_M 2gig, but the Asus 330L (11mbit) has no problems streaming the DVD from my LiteOn 16x, to the Netgear WGR614 (V4), and then over to them. The only problem I had was in the initial setup: running the crapola software that manufacturers provide with their wireless equipment instead of letting XP_SP2 just handle the connection itself was a bad idea. |
