Topic: First attempt at mixing/choreography (vid included)

Hi all,

I've been learning some dancing now for almost a year at a studio, and have in the last month or so formed a crew called src^2 (squared), which comes from the first letter of each of our names. In that month, I attempted to put together our first mix, as well as doing most of the choreography (with some fantastic help from the rest of the crew) for this routine (saveable link - 35mb xvid). I'm the one in the yellow suit (don't laugh when I fall over heheh).

That performance was at a dance competition at the Calamvale Hotel last Saturday 11/3, and we managed to take second place behind a crew that got 4th in a National comp last year (out of 8 finalist crews).

There's not much point to this post other than the fact that I'm proud of how it all turned out and thought I'd share :) Feel free to give any feedback, especially constructive criticism (we're only new, need to improve!).

Before I download anything, what type of dancing is it? Ballroom? Square dancing? Classical? Rock N Roll?

It's really hard to explain what it's like.. Imagine break dancers from the early 80's, but without the acrobatic stuff. The styles are called Popping and Locking. Things like robot/waving/boogaloo etc.

Not having a go, but didn't that go out of style like back in the 80's?

Indeed.. But it's making a bit of a comeback. Also people who have been doing it since then have refined it to a point where it almost looks like a completely different dance in a lot of respects.

Morax, that is f***ing teriffic chorography, and enjoyable to watch 8) I remember when you posted that video here awhile back, on how to the the body wave, and I tried, it sure is harder than it looks, but youve pulled it off bloody well.

Good work on getting together, and having the balls to give it a go.

Also, what is the mix that is used throughout the entire video ? Heard some California Love, but would you be able to host somehow the exact same track? Its awesome 8)

I put the mix together from the following tracks -
1. Superfunk - Endless Street
2. Ronnie Hudson - West Coast Poplock
3. Slick Dogg - Odene Sutsui Dekoi
4. Theme from Benny Hill
5. Daft Punk - Crescendolls

Haha jmr, I kind of want to bboy, but I'm too old to start that now (at least to become really good).. Will be 25 next month, so by the time I'm a decent bboy I'll start going backwards :P Will probalby just stick with popping and locking.

Morax, I've watched your vid a few times now and while I love it, I've got a few suggestions.

You guys gave the impression of just having a f***ing good time. The routine was good in essentials, but wasn't pollished. Attention need's to be paid to the guys who aren't centre stage. Personally, I think you were all most effective during the intro where yourself and the guy in blue are performing a looping set piece in the background, and then go still in a set pose. It adds a bit of depth, even if you aren't the focus.

With the notable exception of the guy in purple and the switch to Follow Me Through Battle, the transitions are, for the most part, awkward. You guys tend to break character, temporarily shattering the illusion of mime. Especially the Benny Hill bit, the guy in green looked like he didn't have a f***ing clue what was going on.

To summerise, just pollish man. Make sure there is no movement not dictated by your choreography.

Also, I'd like to say I am not a dance choreographer, a professional dancer or anyone who should tell you anything. I'm just making a few suggestions based on what I saw. Keep up the f***ing excellent work, and if you're doing a piece at the Calamvale or anywhere else in Brissy, let us all know, I'd take time out to see it.

Awesome thanks for the feedback two&eight.. I went back and had a look keeping your suggestions in mind and there's definately a few things I'll look at refining using your ideas :)

We'll be performing at Mercury in a few weeks actually as soon as they start their Wreck The Floor competition

hey i remember your waving tutorial too.

i used to bboy, but like most of my crew ended up dropping off from injury and whatnot. One of us still does it but that's only from time to time.

I figure you'd know leah and brian? I don't know if brhino teaches at industrie one, but you'd probably see him around. i haven't seen those cats in ages, used to kick around a lot more, but myself and the others just lost interest in the scene.
I painted that (unfinished) Industrie One mural on the short wall there, and a couple of mates did up above the toilets, is it all still there? I haven't been there since then, so it's good to know classes are going strong.

When i saw that you'd posted a vid of poppin and lockin i was sceptical, but it's good to see that you're pretty into the roots, and not going down the typical 'look at me i can boogaloo and pretend this guy's head is a golf ball' sorta posing you see a lot of. I thought the set you put together was tight for someone who's only been dancing a short time.
How about the other guys in the clip? who are they? what are their backgrounds?

Cam, I had no idea that one of the guys that did some of the graff at i1 is from qgl haha!! And hell yeah I know Leah 'n co. What crew were you in while you were still bboyin?

The other guys are all from fairly mixed backgrounds in terms of dancing. The guy in blue - Christian - is kind of starting out, but has really really hard hits and a keen learner (he'll be very good with time!).

Green suit is Chris, he's pretty much pure animation style, having learned from a local named Chuck. He also bboys a bit (learns Capoeira too). I'm teaching him some boog foundation as well as locking.

Purple's name is Rush, he's been dancing about 5 years, almost purely self taught. He does everything - bboy/pop/house step/liquid/rave stomp.. I'm also teaching him some boog and locking.
