We have a bunch of faulty DVD players that we want to give to the wards at the hospital where I work. Some of you may recall a thread I made about them a little while ago: http://qgl.ausforums.com/?agn=thread&id=2366243 Basically, they are good DVD players but have a minor fault which is very easily fixed. I have fixed a couple myself but we cannot then re-distribute these through the hospital in case someone gets electrocuted because of somethign I have done wrong. I want to know if anyone out there can actually fix these officially free of charge? |

would it be good enough for you to fix 'em yourself and get them tagged when a sparky next tags all the other hospital equipment ?? i'd imagine that all the tags get renewed at least annually.

Rodolphe - all those guys check is the electrical plug itself... so it wouldn't really be checking if the equipment is faulty or not.

yer but they check earth leakage etc, generally indicating if it is safe or not
obviously a qualified repairer is the best option tho :o) |

a registered sparky can do it, basically they test it to make sure its safe for use, not just earth leakage etc like some test & tag mobs do.

so you are pulling out a ribbon cable & plugging it back in again? :P surely anyone with half a brain can tell that is not going to make a dvd player electrically dangerous! apart from earth leakage how else could a dvd player become a danger to the user? :P

Just do it.. and don't tell them! You work in a hospital, if they get electrocuted then they are in the best place for it to happen.

At the hospital we have very very strict workplace health and safety policies and we can't do s*** unless we get heaps of permission first. |

i can see that being a hospital they are prolly quite narcy on regulations... but honestly... there is no way mis-plugging a ribbon header (which would carry very low voltage dc power) could make the device dangerous to the user!
it's not like they build dvd players, or any electrical device, that has a possibility of re-routing ac power through a ribbon header/cable. i personally think that this 'freak accident' is so highly unlikely that common sense would prevail in this situation... but then, i work in the electronics industry. |

that's your interpretation! mr.splash :D i have never actually stated that i wasn't going to insure my car... i just made a thread to see if people thought it was decent value for money! however to date it is true that i don't need car insurance. :D:D:D:D:D
in my defence here... look at this pic that jerry/jem posted in the original thread... http://images.ausimages.com/upload/2005-10-14/TN_UNI-1708.jpg the power supply pcb is on the left... the ribbon header in question connects the drive hware to the control pcb... how could anyone make the device dangerous by unplugging/plugging that ribbon? :P last edited by demon at 16:31:12 14/Mar/06 |

For everything we do here we have to consider worst case scenarios. If someone was electrocuted by a DVD player some completely unrelated problem, blame could still be pointed our way for tampering with equipment without any qualifications. Whether or not anything would come of it if it were taken to court, we would rather not give people these DVD players than risk the trouble.
Unfortunately a "1 in a million" chance is too much to risk where I work. |

free of charge haha.. thats gold. I know half a dozen, but anyone with a licence in any trade has more sense then to be doing free work, especially for something like a hospital. Im sure they make enough to cover a few hundred to fix em if they were really worried about it. |
