SONY'S next-generation PlayStation 3 video game console might not appear in key markets this year, Britain's Financial Times has reported.

The new unit could cost the company $US900 ($1220) per unit to produce initially, according to Merrill Lynch analysts quoted in the Financial Times on Sunday.

Sony has indicated a launch for its console in Japan in the northern spring and the industry is not expecting a North American launch until November, the FT said.

So are many people annoyed by this? And the cost?

No, it's all analyst speculation.

No, and why would I care what it costs Sony to manufacture? ;)

Most of the other console launches Have seen large leeps in capabilities, whereas
this generation seems to me like it is just putting a PC under the TV. Call of Duty 2 was the biggest selling xbox360 game..
Only good thing happening to consoles atm is their ability to now run at resolutions close to the PC, but thats due to TV Tech not consoles pushing any real boundaries.

Sony denies claims of delay on PS3

I was impressed by the amount that MS and Sony are prepared to lose on each unit just to grab market share. I guess they pick it up on the outrageously priced games they flog off down the track.

I doubt it costs them $1.2k to manufacture per unit.

Sony, which is adding its Blu-ray high-definition DVD format and the faster Cell chip to the PS3, is facing about $900 in costs to make the device, more than double the retail price of Microsoft's Xbox 360 game console, Merrill said.

Sony doesn't comment on the machine's price, Sakaguchi said.

seems to be common practice. obviously manufacturing costs get cheaper as the product gets a foothold, but the initial costs far outweigh the prices asked for them. and yeah, its all to do with market share, and recouperating those losses on game sales.

charging 100-110 bucks for a game that costs (speculatively) 20 bucks per copy, means that they would be able to recoup the losses after only a few game sales per console.

similar thing happens with the retailers, generally they sell at or below cost price, and places like EB really push the pre-owned game sales in order to make as much money back to cover those costs. i think new games make generally about 10-15 bucks tops, and pre-owned games make about 40-50 bucks depending on the game, age, etc.

Doesn't really matter either way to use because we won't see it here till 2007 anyway.

Cost per unit depends on sales...
