Topic: PSP Firmware Hacked?

Eurogamer are reporting that the PSP community have found a way to get homebrew applications working on the latest PSP firmware.
The exploit works using a malformed save game for Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, so any user wanting to use the homebrew software will need a copy of that game. Since the problem appears to lie with game software rather than with the PSP firmware itself, it's not clear whether Sony will be able to fix the exploit with a new patch as they have done in the past.
Anyone keeping up with the scene have any comments on how well this works, if at all?

www.psphacks.net might have info - I've seen it done on the v2.00 firmware which allowed you to downgrade to 1.50 and run all the homebrew apps, very cool stuff!

Might be time to get a PSP!

If only Sony would embrace the idea of homebrew, as it's probably the biggest attractive feature of the PSP as a whole.

In Oz, you can still buy an old bios version off the shelf. Apparently you can tell but the a letter at the end of the serial number as to what version it is.

I dont have a link to that info handy, but do at home.
Ok. I'm home and found the info.

No Letter = 1.50 (North-American release) Confirmed
A = 1.50 Confirmed
B = 1.51 Confirmed
C = 1.52 Confirmed
D = 1.52 Unconfirmed (multiple version reports)
E = 1.52 Confirmed
F = 2.00 Confirmed
G = 2.01 Confirmed
H = 2.50 Confirmed

They still seem like an expensive bit of kit though. I'm not convinced enough to spend the money, yet.

I bought a psp over Xmas period and I have been tottaly blown away by the awesomness of the little thing. I bought a 1 gig mem Duo card off ebay for $120 and got my free version of Spiderman2 sent to me from Sony ect.. It really does impress me as a pretty cool bit of tech.

Put all our Christmas cruise pics on it via PSP media manager (which does a better job of resizing and resampling 5mp pics from my Sony camera I might add.) Playing Medievil on it at the mo and its great.

Then I learnt how to put my DVD movies onto the mem card and thats a handy little thing to do if you want to give the kids something to watch on a trip ect. Uploading movies from the digital handy cam is a breeze and the picture quality really really impressed me.

Other than the mem card I bought an acrylic screen protector and a nice holder that lets you pop the unit into a ps2-like controller and is much more comfortable to hold for long periods. All in all I am very happy with it and can now take some form of gaming/movie/music entertainment with me. I reckon it s***s on the Ipod I had previously as well.

Also a bonus is that I havent got one dead pixel on it at all.

its now possible to play homebrew on ANY firmware avaliable atm. even 2.60 can run emulators now, but you need GTA from what i understand to use the exploit. ill stick with my 2.00 psp running my emulators thanks

If we can talk about hacking a PSP, why can't we talk about downloading hacked games/websites to download them from on this forum??

The 2.5 PSP hack has been out for a while now, (2 weeks) but only works with a limited amount of games. . .

I made the mistake of buying a Jap PSP wanting to install homebrew, and was greeted with the new 2.5 version of the software when I got it home. Was not until a few weeks ago that I was able to play anything other than the 1 game that I origonally purchased with the unit.

Because they're two different things. One's against the EULA, one's against the Law.

EULA stands for End-User License Agreement and is a legal agreement.

Sounds like breaking this is against the law to me. . .

Edit: Nevermind :D

Also, PSPs are s***. Nothing but a glorified media player which doesn't play DIVX unless heavily modified for Mod player.

Go buy a DS children. Or at least import a PSP. I scoff at the rediculous prices Sony try to sell products in Australia at.

I bet Rockstar are happy. Not that they'll need the extra sales but I wonder if it'll boost sales by much...

They need extra sales after their share prices fell by 50% after it was discovered that they embedded a secret sex game into the GTA SA code.

They got in big big trouble by it and are being sued by the American Government.

I love my PSP - I never bought one because I thought it would be a waste of money as I'd never play it, but after getting one as a freebie deal with my mobile I haven't looked back. Graphics are rad, gameplay choice is going up and with the movie convertor I can throw any video files on it for when I go travelling.

with the movie convertor I can throw any video files on it for when I go travelling.

So you can throw any video file in it after you've decided exactly what you wanted, then spent a good 20 minutes reencoding every file. Its hardly an on-the-go system.
PSPmod still requires its own custom shell, which you need to extract the Audio for + wait about 2 mins to compile.

What I think we really need is something where the owner can simply copy any video file to their Duo stick, without the pesky recompress/different codec rubbish that's going on.

Also:
So now, naoneo (aka fluff) has released PSIX to the public. PSIX includes the features it was always told it would have, such as UMD and Eboot file launching, an audio player with playlist features such as looping, repeat and shuffle, and skins.

Of course, you can always check out the official site for more details, which includes a lite and pro version of this software. For those of you still using 2.01-2.60 firmwares, you can preview PSIX via a flash demo here, and may we all be able to downgrade one day with our PSP property we bought to do with as we please.

I to held off buying a psp as i wasn't sure i would like it. When i upgraded to a new mobile (which work pays for anyway), i scored a free psp and i couldn't be happier with it. I spend 2 hours a day on public transport and my psp is a godsend.

Admittedly, the range of games is quite lacking atm, however, I use it 90% of the time as a media player so it doesn't bother me.

So you can throw any video file in it after you've decided exactly what you wanted, then spent a good 20 minutes reencoding every file. Its hardly an on-the-go system.

pretty insignificant complaints imo. Regardless of its method of encoding, you're still going to have to decide what files you want on it. With the quality of the video conversion sofware available, it only takes a couple of minutes to queue any files needing conversion which i then leave overnight and transfer in the morning. Hardly worth complaining about.

Well its a big contradiciton to the 'on-the-go' image of it, as well as a complaint to the 40 gig or so of already top quality avis I have. I really don't need to make space for any dupes, and its a bloody inconvenience, especially if I'm in a hurry, which I usually am...being impulsive or running late.

fair enough. if you love it thats great.
i think what bothers most is the potential that is stripped away due to unnecessary frustrating rescrictions.

however the point against media is invalid. simply because of the size of the memory availible.
if your putting movies,tv shows or music videos on your going to want to downsize the res to suit the psp lcd anyway inorder to fit more media on said memory card. so, same amount of time basicly spent doing that in refernce to the psp media converter.

That's Sony for you. Same thing is true of their Librie ebook reader. By all reports its really awesome, but crippled by DRM. I get the feeling Sony are being a content company first and a hardware company second.

I thought they are trying to do both. They may try to use their hardware to control the content, similar to Nintendo.

haha "PSP saved me from paying the phone bill. Hence it MUST be good!"
There's no damn reason why Sony can't NOT be c***s. But they choose to be.
GG Sony. I'll probably still buy a PS3 <_<

*sigh*

"there's no reason why they can't" also can be reworded to "There's no reason why they don't", which is, in fact, NOT a negative due to the "no" and "don't"/"can't", captain dictionary.

So, the sentence states: There's no reason why they don't NOT be c***s. Understand that the statement combines to say that Sony don't have to be c***s, but already assumes that they are c***s.
"But they choose to be" affirms the fact that they enjoy being c***s, which I'm sure is fairly easy to work out, once you've gotten over that mountain of first sentence.

still confused?
