Genetics researchers in Taiwan breed a flurescent green pig or 3 in the hopes of gaining more recognition for stem cell research.
Clicky So while the western world bans the controlled research into these fields we have other nations clowning around with all sorts of dodgy s*** :/. |

Why Apparently it's to track the development of stem cells in the body. A pig is an ideal candidate for a model of what might happen in people if we use stem cells (as a pig has a similar makeup or something - not sure of the details...not my area of study), so obviously, knowing how stem cells, differentiate and grow in a pig is useful in understanding how the human body might respond if stem cells are injected into it. Stem cells could prove to be useful in the treatment of a number of conditions, so yeah, it kind of makes sense to me (even if does sort of appear to be a publicity stunt...which on some level, it may be). |

Stem cells are like a blank slate of genetic data in our bodies so if we learn how to manipulate them we can basically turn them into anything that a body might need in order to regenerate itself when debilitating diseases/conditions present themselves such as cancer or liver and kidney failure.
Or such is my understanding of it. But while we ban it, quacks such as the korean in the story are free to play god possibly with little regulation on what they are actually doing :/. |

There is some regulation but no-where near as tight as it is in Australia (to my knowledge at least). Japan is also pretty well known for it's stem cell research. Several of the best lecturers/academics at UQ in that field of study have gone over there in the past few years because of it (and the money and looser regulations). |

They ban stem-cell research but it's ok to build nuclear missiles and heaps of other s*** that'll f*** people up.
Well done everybody! |

Good point rev but what i'm most pissed about is that the bans were put in place to stop the missuse of stem cell research in creating abominations and freaks of nature and to make more efficient biological weapons for use on humans but then all these other countries just continue to research without missing a beat.
It has solved nothing and in fact has done nothing but slow our benificial medical research that could be saving lives right now! |

Why From the linked article ... The transgenic pigs, commonly used to study human diseases, would help researchers monitor and trace changes of the tissues during the physical development, Wu said. I wish people would stop having such a hissy fit about technology. I want gills already! |

In 2003, a Taiwan company began selling the world's first genetically engineered fish, sparking protests by environmentalists who said the fluorescent green fish posed a threat to the earth's ecosystem.hahaha oh noes, My fish tank is the earth's ecosystem! Some FGTS need a life. |
