And John Safran got a fatwa issued against Rove McManus. They don't mean squat unless issued by someone important and people want to follow them.
Real fatwa: Supreme ruler of Iran issues a fatwa against an anti-islamic criminal infidel scumbag author for blaspheming Islam. Fake fatwa: Some two-bit 'cleric' says you can't get naked when pumping your wife and that not even you can peep under the sack. |

And hence why I no longer believe in any kind of religion anymore. I grew up with the Christian faith (as a Catholic), and although some of the commandments and proverbs and whatnot seem nice and all, I just don't believe in dedicating my life to something I have no proof of (yeah, me = ye of little faith). I'd rather live life as the best person I can be and not rely on religion as a security net (which is what I believe it is for most people, not that anyone else has to agree) for my life because I don't know what's going to happen when I pass away. Each to their own though; If I ever have children I'd still probably bring them up as Cathoic and educate them on other religions and let them decide what they want to believe in when they were mature enough. |

"I got belief there. I just don't feel like it applies to me." That is a very odd statement. (I had to fix up the quotes spelling and stuff so as not to go nuts). |

You must not go to the city often there's often a group protesting China's opression of religon. I go into the city a fair bit,and i cant say ive ever seen a protest over china's opression of religion.Which religion do they attempt to opress over there? From DecayingCorpse's comment of "you could just ban all religion" and WW bringing up China,do they attempt to actually ban "all" religions or just a select number? |

google "falun gong oppression". It's not so much a religion as a spititual meditation/yoga type thing, but it's totally oppressed in china. Spend a few minutes researching and see for yourself the horrible treatment these people get from the chinese government. |

The tendency for lapsed Catholics (Agent 99) to raise their children Catholic anyway is weird and as far as I can tell, unique to Catholics (at least when compared to other christian churches)
Personally (having attended christian schools) the indoctrination I got as a kid has caused me problems and I would prefer that my kids were old enough to make the decision for themselves |

Ok,having read a few sites, you can get an idea why China would worry about certain religious groups...
China has had a history of religious and spiritual uprisings that had catastrophic effects on the country. "In the late 1770s, the White Lotus rebellion against the Qing dynasty was led by Wang Lun, a master of martial arts and herbal medicine." Perhaps the most serious was the Taiping rebellion of 1845-1864 which was led by a leader who viewed himself as the Son of God. Some 20 million died in that revolt.Taken from http://www.religioustolerance.org/rt_china.htm Falun Gong is a group that simply grew too large for the communist leadership's liking; its 70-million-plus practitioners in China far outnumbered communist party members. The persecution was ordered by communist dictator Jiang Zemin, who feared losing control over people's hearts and minds. Other, smaller groups that the State has not been able to take control of are persecuted, too, like Protestants, Roman Catholics, and Tibetan Buddhists. But if the following is a true account of what Falun Gong, then yes i cant see why the practitioners of it are oppressed - Falun Gong is a traditional Chinese spiritual discipline that includes exercise and meditation. Its principles are based on Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance. Persons who practice regularly find it to bring them better health, reduced stress, inner peace, and deepened morals. The practice began in China in 1992 and quickly spread by word of mouth throughout China and then beyond. Falun Gong is practiced by over 100 million people in 40 countries. I must say this has interested me somewhat and on a personal note i would like to say damn you Korbs!! Every time you come into these discussions you always make me kick into research mode. |

The tendency for lapsed Catholics (Agent 99) to raise their children Catholic anyway is weird and as far as I can tell, unique to Catholics (at least when compared to other christian churches) Yeah, maybe. I dunno - I just think that although I don't believe in the Catholic Church (or any other religion for that matter) anymore, that I was glad to have been brought up with a lot of the core values instilled in me. Basic things like treat people well...yada yada yada (mind you, there are a LOT of things the Catholic Church preaches that I *completely* disagree with). If I ever decide to have children (which I probably will one day) I would just like to give them the opportunity to learn about a religion (and the Catholic Church seems ok - not perfect though, but not bad either), and decide for themselves. Plus I just think it would be good to bring a child up understanding the way that a lot of people think, and give them the opportunity to decide for themselves what is good and bad about the religion. /Rant. |

But you as a parent should be instilling these virtues into your children rather than using church as a surogate parent.
I personally believe people who do this are just selfish and don't really want the responsibillity that comes with parenting. Also the only thing that happens when you expose small children to religion at an age where they are actively trying to learn the rules of the world is that they then only believe what is told to them by people they trust. If they are exposed like this they take religion as a litteral truth just like maths and then it is so much harder for them when they grow up to adjust to the real world rather than fantasy land where floating space wizards command their obedience or they get fried in some fricken hell dimension. |

Yeah as for my kids - which I'll certainly have one day if I actually manage to sucker some babe into it - they'll certainly be brought up with all those great ideas - be good to one another, don't cheat, steal, or basically otherwise be a butthole
these are, after all, common sense ideas that don't need fear and guilt to prop them up but they are going to state schools |

Mmmm...yeah...maybe. I'm still pretty undecided about all of this stuff (in case you hadn't noticed). I'm only 21 though (not planning on having kids for a little while yet!). I only recently decided that I don't want to believe in the religion thing anymore. You guys have given me something to think about anyway. |
