I just got a mail from bigpond as follows:

Dear BigPondŽ Member,

Here's some exciting news about your BigPond Broadband Cable service - news that won't cost you anything extra, but may give you access to higher cable speeds.

From 5 January 2006, BigPond will be conducting a trial that may provide you with download speeds up to double those you receive today. The trial will run for approximately two months after which we'll review the results.

To access the new speeds, all you will need to do is reboot your modem on or after 5 January and any speed increase will happen automatically. This will not affect your monthly plan fee, your billing cycle or your BigPond contract.
Better still, you'll be able to continue enjoying high-speed cable for as long as you stay on your current plan (unless we need to end the trial). And don't forget, you can keep an eye on your usage by logging onto the BigPond Broadband Usage Meter regularly.

Thats going to be freakin fast :)

If by double speed, they mean quadruple cap then i am happy.

Looked on whirlpool, and it seems its only for people on the 20 gig plan?

it's never going to be as fast as adsl2 because of the last mile infrastructure.

because if you need to host stuff, they want you to pay extra.

Because Cable unlike DSL is a shared medium. There is only so much upload bandwidth available per person in the spectrum. We can have fast uploads but one or two or twenty people might consume all the bandwidth for that node and then everyone would complain of a s*** service when latency jumps through the roof.
