In a rare display of brand name generosity, Vivendi have given the go ahead for King's Quest IX - now called The Silver Lining to be developed as a fan game. A group of gamers banded together to try and save it, resulting in Vivendi making the following announcement:

After extensive evaluation, Vivendi Universal Games is pleased to announce that the fan developed trilogy project ‘The Silver Lining' (previously known as King's Quest IX: Every Cloak Has A Silver Lining), based on characters from Sierra Entertainment's King's Quest series, has been given approval to continue development. We look forward to seeing the first of its three upcoming chapters, ‘Shadows', completed soon.

That's amazing. I never thought I would see the day when a big company would let fans make such a sequel. Most companies hold on to their IP no matter how old and it is.
