Anyone seen any fixes for Quake 4 (or maybe Doom 3) when it just crashes to desktop? When I run quake4.exe I get the Q4 logo splash, the video mode changes and the screen goes black, then it dumps me immediately back to desktop. There's no errors or anything. I'm running on an AMD64 with a Geforce 6800 (just updated drivers to 78.01s) and an AC97 onboard sound (just updated to latest drivers offered on Asus website for my motherboard, A8V).

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Make sure your pak files aren't corrupt? I tried removing the intro movies quickly and it did the same thing.

Activision Support Page and if that doesn't work try disabling your sound card and trying

You should get yourself an Audigy 2 ZS card dude instead of the onboard sound. Dunno if that'll help but it's an awesome card.

if he did that his hardware would be pretty much the same as mine (athlon64 3500, 6800gt, a8v, audigy2 zs) and quake4 works great for me.

Hey, so they are - weird, I got redirected to the 78.01's from Steam so I just figured they were the latest.

trog, i remember someone on ocau was reporting a similar problem. Apparently they found a mention of this error on planetquake and the solution was:

had the same problem, found a fix on planetquake forums,

download this and install it
http://www.openal.org/downloads.html
like 300k OpenAL codec, runs perfectly now!!!!

i havent had this problem, so can't comment on whether it works or not.

Aha - boba's post says I need to be in 32bit desktop colour, so I changed that - now I get the quake4 dialog thingy with a new error:

man 32bit desktop sucks! its noticably slower than 16bit - not a lot, but I really notice it in firefox rendering pages.

Game performance is lower with dual displays enabled either way, Ultramon adds another tab into the program shortcut property window to allow the disablement/re-enablement of secondary displays on program launch/exit.
