Just read this off news.com.au, apparently iTunes Music will finally be available for AU by the end of this month:

ONLINE sales of music in Australia will explode by more than 500 per cent this year with the iTunes music store set to launch by the end of the month.

After waiting more than 12 months, hundreds of thousands of iPod owners will be able to access paid downloads from October 31.

An Apple media conference on Tuesday is expected to confirm the Australian store's launch and how much we will pay per song or album.

There's a couple of songs that I want which I can find nowhere else besides the iTunes music store - I'd love to be able to buy them for $1.50 or whatever they're going to be priced at.

That probably should say "...will not be able to immediately download tracks from the iTMS". I think they'll still be downloading them if they want them. Silly old music companies, if they can't buy your music more easily than they can download it, what do you think is going to keep happening?

Must agree trog. But unfortunately the record industry has adopted, as an article of faith, the concept that electronic delivery is the very spawn of satan. So even when we are talking about legal downloads from the worlds most respected online music distributor, a distributor run by one of the worlds largest technology companies, who undertake to give the record companies the same royalty as they would get from a CD; the record companies just can't bring themselves to do it.

Personally, I think it is just so damn convinient to say that even though EVERYONE is absolutely in love with your artists and is desperate to hear their music, but won't buy their CD because of the evil internets. And it is so awkward to say that you can't sell CD's because your artists are s***, and you were wrong anyway about the mainstream wanting their music on CD, not electronically.
