a mate of mine has run into a problem with his internet. Somehow, his internet has been disabled cause of some virus hes contracted :S

Dunno what it is? Hes running blaster virus removal tool from norton atm, but other than that we have no idea what it could be? anyone seen anything floating around taht might be the problem?

he can sign into msn, but cant recieve or send messages either

are you sure it's a virus? my laptop screwed up when I screwed around with the network settings, I had to uninstall/reinstall the network card. Maybe his windows just lost the plot & said no internet for you, come back two weeks.

that is a metric f***load of running processes. why does he have 2 messengers running?

2 virus scanners? I suggest you remove the network card from the network properties thing, then reboot & reinstall it. I can't see anything really unusual in that list, but then again virusses could easily put themselves in a directory of known good programs to fool you.

install Avast
update
turn off all firewalls cept hardware
remove all antivirus cept avast
live in peace.

most AV's f*** things up more then they solve (esp norton), avast is the best ive found so far, in terms of leaving the system alone and also grabbing virus's. After working with fixing computers for a fair few years, most computers bought in with 'viruses' arent, they are merely norton f***ing itself.

it could be your lmhosts file I had a virus once that wrote all the virus checkers url in the lmhosts so they'd be blocked from updating. Cleaned the file up in wordpad scanned for the virus, got rid of it.

C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe = evil file

Yes, it should be in System32 however the file you are in fact thinking of is lasss.exe (3x s)

C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe is the correct answer.

i just had the same virus this morning.

and hermi - c:\windows\system32\lsass.exe is the valid file and correct name not sure what ur tlkin about.

steps to get rid:

firstly in your c:\ its probably spawning a bunch of random files
these can be gotten rid of easily enough (end process if they are running).

now boot into safe mode
delete c:\windows\lsass.exe

and then run your normal spyware/antivirus cleanup.

IF you hav my problem of not being able to boot into safe mode (like i do):

go through registry, and delete every FOLDER named lsass and every KEY that refers to c:\windows\lsass.exe (NOT ONES THAT REFER TO THE SYSTEM32 FOLDER)

then reboot, and the file will no longer be loaded so you can delete and be virus free once more.

edit: also www.ccleaner.com is very useful for cleaning out temporary folders where this virus probably came from - use it too ^-^

Reinstall the XP TCP/IP stack, it's very simple. Instructions can be found at http://www.google.com.au/

Once that's done, run a good AV program over your system. My personal favourite is http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ because I'm a cheap bastard.
