Topic: Unrealistic Action in Movies

Went and saw transporter 2 last night. I went in expecting a movie of similar calibre as the original. Lots of car driving / chase scene action, well choreographed fist fights and some classy dames.

Instead i ended up seeing a movie full of unrealistic action and explosions with cars and planes completely defying gravity and physics.

What is it with movies as of late? If its an action genre with no sci-fi storyline then why don't they keep it that way? Instead of sensationalising stunts that are just completely impossible. I like being entertained when i go and see a movie but i draw a distinct line between realism and completely unbelievable trash.

I would say it is because no one cares about reality anymore.

And by saying 'no one' I mean the kindless mases who the industry earn most of their money off.

Yeah kinda sick of all these wire fight scene movies now. I would like to see more movies with more realistic fighting scene and even with some plots.

wolfieee if you want good fight scene (was choreograph of course but from real fighters) check out this movie on DVD:

Hunted.

In the green woods of Silver Falls, Oregon, Aaron Hallam, a trained assassin AWOL from the Special Forces, keeps his own brand of wildlife vigil. After brutally slaying four deer hunters in the area, FBI Special Agent Abby Durrell turns to L.T. Bonham-- the one man who may be able to stop him. At first L.T. resists the mission. Snug in retirement, he's closed off to his past, the years he spent in the Special Forces training soldiers to become skilled murderers. But when he realizes that these recent slayings are the work of a man he trained, he feels obligated to stop him. Accepting the assignment under the condition that he works alone, L.T. enters the woods, unarmed--plagued by memories of his best student and riddled with gulit for not responding to Aaron's tortured letters to him as he began to slip over the edge of sanity. Furious as he is with his former mentor for ignoring his pleas for help, Aaron knows that he and L.T. share a tragic bond that is unbreakable. And, even as they go into their final combat against each other, neither can say with certainty who is the hunted and who is the hunter.

It's got Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones, can't go wrong!

One of the best and dirtiest knives fight scence ever. Very good chase scene too.

I enjoyed this movie a lot eventhough a lot of people reckons the plot is crap

The Hunted was exactly the same as The Fugitive, only with a bit of fighting in it.

movies are FICTION. as opposed to REAL.

if you want real, get out a doco, or try creating your own gang/drug running syndicate/clandestine ninja organisation :p

what would kill bill have been like without the wires?

wires etc have their place in a certin genere, however i completely agree that obviously impossible stunts in regular action flicks pisses me off no end. It spoils the movie, because once it has you hooked and your 'into' the movie, then this s***house action scene comes along and instead you are thinking 'thats impossible' and the magic of the movie is lost. It'd be like theatre actors walking around the foyer in costume and out of character, it destroys the vibe.

The fight scene with Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in Way Of The Dragon is one of the best around. The rest of the movie is complete ass though. Also, The Perfect Weapon with Jeff Speakman has some f***ing awesome scenes as well.

Bloody oath, that train scene was awesome :) Your right too, it's called The Hunted.

what would kill bill have been like without the wires?

Kill Bill was in part a homeage to all the Hong Kong action movies with wires etc, I dont see how its meant to be used as an example of unrealistic action. Wires have their place, but seems harder to find movies without wires now as action movies keep trying to go 1 up and do better than the last big one :/

Movies are pure fantasy.

You knwo the matrix isn't real right ?

Any time you see someone get knocked back by a bullet ... they're lying
Anytime you see a car jumping and landing and continuing to drive .... they're lying (they probably crashed atleast 1 or 2 before getting it right unless it was total CGI)

imo .. accept it and move on.

Yeah! What the f*** is wrong with you people? The point of watching a movie is to escape reality for an hour or 2. Some of the best movies in the world wouldnt exist if they agreed with wolfieee.

This is so so stupid

I'm talking about real action, there's a fine line between reality and fiction. If the movie is based around a certain genre and the entire movie depicts a real life scenario / plot, then why not match the action to what would approximately happen in real life, instead of blatantly ignoring reality when making the movie.

At least make the action believable if the movie / plot is set in the real world. Thats all i'm saying.

Don't get me started about The Island. What could have been a great movie was destroyed by advertising and totally over the top actions scenes - like when they fell down the side of the building, crashed through a building side and somehow managed to escape unscathed.

Bruckheimer movies used to be my bread and butter but with that one he just totally lost the plot. It had a potentially great story but just got pwned by woeful execution. Also, Scarlett Johanssen is hotter than hot, she's hot hot hot.

isn't that what the matrix was all about, the moves in that movie were not "realism" but everyone loved it, its just they are trying to milk it for all its worth.

Obes is saying that when someone really gets shot there is insufficient momentum from the bullet to move a human body... it's just movie special effects. So no, not even if they are Brandon Lee.
I sorta agree with wolfiee that when you are watching a movie that is using the fact that it could happen to immerse the viewer, unrealistic effects can spoil the immersion. Mission Impossible was a bit like this for me... just a bit too unbeleivable! Or a movie like xXx... where it pushed it so far it became comedy :P
But for sci-fi or fantasy I prefer the action to be totally over the top ala sin city or wacky chinese action like tai chi master!

i thought movies were for entertainment, not to go "omg how unrealistic is that! wtforz" granted there are a lot of crap action movies that are more comedy than anything else. also die hard was an awesome movie. apparantly a lot of other people thought so cuz it spawned 2 sequals

i don't mind them being over the top if they're not taking themselves seriously.

eg: True Lies but the rest just piss me off.

Huh?

We must be thinking about different movies. Chris Lambert did another one called that but it was very low budget and not many people know about it, including Chris. Let us never talk of this again.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so if a bullet really did knock a body back like in the movies, physics would dictate it would also throw the person back who shot the gun at a greater force(due to lost force during travel).

I am sure the physics geeks can use the correct terms and explain it better.

Awesome! A new Mortal Kombat movie.

As long as it's as good as the first and a million times better than the second then I'll be happy.

Wolfieee i know what you're saying and i agree.

Like blade had the defying of the law of physics type of thing but it was right for the movie since it involved vampires and what not. Havent seen transporter 2 but it does sound like ass.

except for the fact that the bullet is not shedding all it's energy upon impact, it goes through the person.

so really, they'd get thrown back a bit if they were wearing body armour, but if the bullet penetrated it'd no where near as much.

btw guys, u can't use the matrix as an example of bulls*** scenes not being realistic, the very idea of the film was that it wasn't real and the laws of physics inside the matrix were flexible

Unrealistic action can work well if the plot-line allows it. Like the Matrix. But since the Matrix, movies have been pretty much saturated with Matrix-esque action. Which sucks balls.

People are saying movie is pure fantasy so just deal with it? Well I got to a movie to be immersed and forget about the real world for an hour or two. That's awesome entertainment. It's hard to do that when the movie just doesn't make sense, or the action is over the top and doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie. Thats a bit annoying, nothing to lose sleep over, but just enough to post on the internet about.

It's like in Attack Of The Clones when Anakin jumps off the hover car thingy at the beginning and falls hundreds of metres. That was complete bulls*** even for a Star Wars film. Alot of the stuff that went on in the last three Star Wars films was bulls*** and embaressing to watch. Matrix I can understand but not Star Wars.

Anyone remember the trailer to the first Transporter and when he was at his house and the place was being shot to peices, some dude fires a missile and Jason Stathams characters deflects the rocket with a silver coffee/tea tray? Anyway, it wasn't in the final cut thank f***.

Also, Scarlett Johannsen looks like one of those blow up sex dolls. Blank look on her face with big lips plus she has no calf muscles.
