Core 2 Duo
E6850 @ 3.00GHz
3.00 GHZ, 4 GB of RAM

9800 GTX+

Now i can upgrade to a quad core and buy a 5850 ( my power supply will run it ) its gonna cost about aprox 700 bucks give or take

Or

Save up for a new pc....

I figure with diablo 3 , starcraft 2 and bad company 2 , these games will last for awhile.. so thats why im feeling i should upgrade and hold out for a new pc a little longer!

Whats your opinion ?

quad core is barely an upgrade in that case, unless you mean quad core i5/i7.
And I don't see the games you mentioned being too stressful anyway.

Don't bother with anything less than a Core i7. If you can't afford that (you'll need a new mobo too), then wait it out until you can. No point shelling out for an upgrade if you're just going to half-arse it.

Definitely hold out, as far as I know nothing is pushing that kind of technology still.

And here comes drunk Crizane Tribal to say: (btw I'm singing this)

Bugger off with your newf*****ry;
try making a few posts before coming in with animosity.
You're too retarded to realise,
that a 9800gtx is a real prize.
An E6850 is sufficient,
you silly new c***.
4 gigs of ram,
is more than a dram;
It should get you through
what you want to do.

TL;DR: Just keep playing games until you can't play new stuff, then upgrade. It's not that hard to work out.

I am holding for for i9 or whatever the f*** its going to be called but it will be in a macpro, opting for i7 as a gaming rig if I get around to building one

As for video I would opt for 5970 simply cause I want the monitor support and actually need it, but thats me. A 9800GTX and your current config is fine and I see little reason to want to change it considering that at the moment you would realistically need to upgrade the entire thing so its not an upgrade its build a new rig time for you. So hold off

I don't honesty feel that the money you will spend right now will have you saying s*** that was what I wanted so I would honesty hold off, I think you will honesty get a slight bit of buyers remorse, because the performance jump isn't all that great.

Make incremental upgrades swap up to ssd first, I would wait until next Q then purchase that card for around $350 or pick a second hand 5970 which I would imagine would be in the 500ish mark at that stage. BTW what PSU do you have? And also by Q2 most of the new games will be released and you will have a better view of the picture and requirements at that stage

Starcraft 2 and Diablo III aren't out for a while. Why can't you just wait until Starcraft 2 is released, see how it runs on your box then upgrade as necessary?

Seconded. I'm planning on staying at LEAST a year behind the hardware curve now, because it works out so much cheaper. In fact I reckon I'm two years behind now and still have a decent rig (though it was top of the line when I bought it I guess).

I upgraded my e8400 to a q9400 for Bad Company 2. For some reason there is a huge difference in framerate between dual and quadcore cpu's for this game.

Overclocked the q9400 to 3.6ghz and it runs great.

we're living in the age of NVidia Cuda.

I want my GPU to run this game. My CPU is just there to help the motherboard post, and get me to the desktop..

maybe some sound stuff too...

I'm such a nerd, I'm so excited by the prospect of making better use of a graphics card's stream processing capabilities. I'm sick of my graphics card being a lazy s***, not doing anything when I'm not playing games. There are already a few good video converters out there which will offload some of the encoding to the GPU. I can't wait for OS's and other applications to make better use of the under-utilised grunt available in modern graphics cards.

I'm sorry this post didn't rhyme :(

overclock it instead of replacing it.

Honestly nothing seems too difficult for a dualcore 3.0 (although mine is at 3.8ghz right now) and a 9800GTX.

If you find something let me know, but otherwise latest games play fine at 1080p on my TV.

or buy a console, cheaper and every game released is guaranteed to run fine.

Mmm yeah i get so upset seeing when my PC is running the OS and my CPU is at 0-1% and i know it could be flat 0% if it was entirely CPU.

Also you know CPU uses a f***load less power than the GPU? So offloading useless things is just going to cost you more. We're talking 10's of dollars in a year.

CT, gold. I sung it to that tune that Spook posted in the weird youtubes clip (the South African).

On the OP: hold out for sure.

Well , i cant really run Badcompany 2 ... the frames are terrible.. I think the quad core is a huge part of it because my friend has a 8800gt and quad and he said he can run it alright.

Wait for 6 core cpu, more widespread (and chipset supported) USB3 and Sata6g

3ch DDR3 and the fermi's which may start whooping ATI again :(

My mate told me that the i7 is stupidly overpowered and overpriced at the moment

he said that a quad core will be what games use for the next 2 years... is that true?

i7 is hardly overpowered.

Your computer is fine. Don't bother upgrading unless you're really upgrading.

i9 hexacore + 3ch DDR3 + SSD + Next gen video or bust.
