So, apparently there was a fire in my building. We didn't get evacuated, and they've just told use that its been extinguished.

I walked right past the riverside centre, down to the ferry and hung around for a few minutes and caught the 4:07 - didn't see any fire evidence, smoke, or fire engines.

I walked past on my way to the city cat yesterday afternoon, there were like 6 engines and a couple more rescue vans. It looks like just the affected floor was evacuated.

This actually concerns me, I used to work on level 27 of the riverside centre and I had to go to the warden training one time. Anyway, they have this staggered alarm system - which makes sense when you think about everyone using only 2 stairwells to get out, but it means when theres a fire on one floor, they slowly notify the floor above and below, and so on.

I always worried aboout being that high up and being one of the last to know.

I dont like fire.

They evacuated floors 42 -> 38 apparently. We got told of the ordeal after it had all happened. We had heard the sirens, but assumed it was just "the normal CBD goings on".

Apparently, an oil tray in a lift engine room caught fire on lvl 42. Nothing too serious.

^ That can be really serious! Depending on the design and if the lift is being used, the fire gets access to all the oxygen from the lift shaft.

I would hate to think the fire drills we did were for nothing.

You can get dizzy and easily fall down those stairs. After a while of going down and around it can get dangerous!

In March / April '07 there was a proper kitchen fire on Level 9 Xstrata Copper on a Saturday I think. That was a massive deal which involved 6 or more fire trucks and they closed off Eagle St untill it was deamed safe. I was there when It was happening , security put out the fire. The fire brigade said 2mins longer and it would be out of control as the glass awening out the front of the street makes the high rise ladders useless in a fire there and they have to go up there on foot via the fire stairs , another 5 mins wasted , then they have to put out the fire. Great.......


Somebody put a plastic bowl on an oven - it melted and went from there.

I used to work in the telstra tower in george st in sydney... some builders were doing fitout work one day on an empty space on level 27 when they knocked the wet heads in the fire control system and flooded the floor with water.

Normally this would be fine as they just mop up the mess.... however whoever designed the building neglected to design the building electrial and comms risers with plinthed bases... so the water from level 27 got into the building electrical core. Was water pouring down over the electrical cabling that supplied about 80,000 amps to the tenancy boards

They had to shut down power to the whole building and evacuate a few thousand workers. Including the data centre for the company I was working for... UPS lasted abut 3 hours and after that it was all quiet... generator was of no use as the power feeds to the floor were shut down :/
