I was checking some greasemonkey code and I ended up on slashdot firehose. This was on there.. an article from 1995 from a relatively respected source about why the internet won't become the communication medium that we have today.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/106554/page/1

It almost hurts to read each wrong sentence in each wrong paragraph.

Wow, thats silly

but he is right that the internet will never replace real life, but i don't think anyone in their right mind ever believed that.

Meh that guy's perspective is something you see from a lot of people, even in IT. Maybe not about the net (anymore) but about the potential of computers in general, and how they should work. A lot of people just can't stand the idea that something new will work, they can't dream or imagine anything other than how it's been for 30 years.

I think the comments are funnier than the article.

I kinda find the same thing about Electric Cars.

When I tell ppl that Some of the First Cars were Electric (circa early 1900's) and that there was 'Working' Electric Car program in California that was s***canned a few yrs ago ... they still dont believe me.

http://www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar/electric.html

Ppl's minds are so closed to the idea that its scary.

i still don't believe you, maybe you should read something about the car besides what you saw in a s***ty biased documentary.

electric cars were impractical and too expensive and nothing will have changed that in 10 years. PZEVs are a better focus, because they can allow for a much higher market penetration, so the overall environmental benefit is way better. like how much did the EV1 program cost? 1 billion or something? for a few hundred cars that did a few hundred kilometres a month driven by posers while they weren't at sea protecting whales or chaining themselves to bulldozers.

i don't think he was that wrong. for example e-books haven't really caught on yet and are still suffering usability problems and CD-learning never took off (busto in a big way if i remember). constrast his opinion to others who wildly got it wrong in the other direction.

that doco was hell funny because they had nader all sad about how the electric car was killed off but it was probably consumer protection laws championed by him that led to GM having to scrap the cars and not selling them off.

Nf like I told you the last time we had this conversation you gotta get online and read bro. The doco barely scratched the surface about EV's.

I'm not going to argue with u mate.

Also its PHEV(Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicle) or REEV(Range extended Electric Vehicle).
P.S GM lost 38 billion dollars (US) last yr.
