Okay guys, serious question.
Every Thursday, we have a Cross Country (Mountain Bike) race out at Westgate Park. Yesterday however (and for the last few weeks) there's been this kid on a pocketbike tearing up the track. He's been told what he's doing is illegal and that he needs to leave. He's also been riding backwards (at full speed) down singletrack while we've had riders racing. However: Yesterday, during the race, he picked up this massive f***off rock (we're talking about maybe 6-9 inches in size) and hurled it at one of the race organisers while he was on track. Brilliant shot I gotta admit from that distance, but it may have chipped the bone. Police were down to take a report of the assault etc. About 15 people chased him; One (one of the national level riders) chased him all the way down Lorimer Street before he got away. We believe this guy is probably around 16. So, serious question: If something like this happens again, how can we *safely* arrest this guy while he's on a motorbike? I'm after ideas. I know there's going to be plenty of "f*** off you cyclists" and "kill the bastard" type posts, but I'd like to keep this serious. This is a pretty serious attack. |

If you know he's likely to turn up and tends to take the same route out of the place when he's being chased, maybe walkie talkies and some people waiting to head him off?

You wont be able to stop him safely if he is on the bike. He cant possibly be on it all the time. It'd take a bit of effort, but you could follow him and find out where he lives. Have people at various intersections to mark out which he goes home. He probably doesn't live far away.
Once you find where he lives you could knock on his front door, let him know that if he keeps doing it you will disable his bike, expensively. Or too keep it legal just say hello and tell him to stop. Once he realizes you know where he lives he isn't anonymous anymore and will probably stop. Alternatively, WHY are the police not doing anything about it. Ask for an office to be at the cross country area so when the guy comes out on his moto he will see the cop and leave. |

Tacks aren't a feasible option as he could see them, pick them up, and do more damage to our own cyclists - but a nailbed strip might be the closest next safe option if we wanted to man the exits. And there's still a safety issue.
Alternatively, WHY are the police not doing anything about it. Ask for an office to be at the cross country area so when the guy comes out on his moto he will see the cop and leave. It's not really that they're not doing anything about it, they can't at this point. Noone knows who he is, and he'd already long gone by the time the cops had arrived - I'm unsure if they're going to make a visit next week. I do think the idea of just following him home is the most sensible though - he's on a non-road-registered motorbike, and this happened in a park in the middle of the city (under the West Gate Bridge), so he can't live far from there surely. However we'd need to get another person on a similar bike to be able to efficiently/effectively follow him to wherever he goes. Somehow I reckon he'd recognise Jack if he followed him again. |

I assume he wears a full helmet, else you could just get everyone to take pics and film him next time and give that to police.

Yeah, full faced helmet.
We had three photographers out there last week, one last night, none seem to have a photo of him :/ As much as I wanted serious responses, I'm loving that tazer idea right about now :/ |

Door Knock! :) Surely there couldn't be that many houses that a dedicated team of cyclists like your selfs couldn't easily cover fairly quickly.
Smear campaign! Ask everyone if they have seen a motor bike rider with a full face helmet driving around |

we always had a trail bike or 2 on hand at the larger events mostly just for track maintainence and general running around (raced downhill so alot of up and down the mountain for the officials). best bet is to get a tralbike in there early and have someone just hang out till he shows up, or if you know his entry/exit point get somebody to camp it out and fire off a call to the cops as soon as he enters so hopefully they can get there when he's leaving.

Not recommended considering a mountain bike could come flying along the same track with the piano wire...
Trail bikes are my passion and this guy gives us all a bad name. Find a mate who also rides and have him rock up and chase the little s***. he wont outrun a full size dirt bike if hes on a pocket bike. |

piano wire between 2 trees at neck height or if you want him to survive, mooring rope. Actually we're worried about someone doing this at the track. Late last year there were some kids hanging around during the school holidays, they were doing stupid things like moving crates onto the racing line mid race. Most of us could still just ride them, though a few people got caught out. But what we're really worried about is some idiot stringing up piano or fishing wire :/ that will teach the race organiser not to wear shin-pads 24/7 WTF? It's Cross Country, not Downhill or MotoX. Who the f*** wears armour in XC or crits? you need someone with a 250 to chill with yous. when he turns up chase him and stick the boot in hard (literally) as you pass. guaranteed not to fail. Yeah, this may be what needs to happen, but we gotta be careful that won't get any of us into trouble. We wanna make sure this guy's heading to juvy, so don't want to do anything which might help get him off any charges. |

the boot method is employed by policeman types quite frequently to dislodge individals riding in socially unacceptable places. it doesnt pop up in the statement of facts too often. go figure.

If you get one that's giving you static, he probably thinks he's a real cowboy, so you gotta break that son of a bitch in two. Cut off one of his fingers. The little one. Then tell him his thumb's next.

As much as I hate to admit it, cops are pretty f***ing useless with this sort of thing. It's not really their fault, it's just easy for this f***ing scum to slip through the cracks. Think about it, he knows he could be in trouble. So he could just sell his bike and helmet to somebody far away (or hide them away till it's old news) and you'd never know who it was.
