I just got an external hard drive, when ever i connect it to my laptop if shows up like this...

I'd say its because of some funky software on the drive. I don't know if it would be possible to change the icon.

Format it first? to NTFS. I have the exact same drive and it doesn't show up like that.

Check the root of the portable drive for autorun.inf, if there is one in there delete the line that says

Icon=blah.ico (or it might be pointing to an .exe)

^^ not just WD drives, my seagate drive came with a virus pre installed care of those sneaky chinese, my USB memory stick has some U3 software that apparently works like a virtual machine or some s***. I'd say just about every external storage device these days has some sort of software preinstalled.
