Anyone know of any alternatives to the xbox360 wireless network adapter?

yeah, buy a single ethernet port wireless bridge, so you runa 0.5m cat5 from the xbox - wireless AP thing and then connect the AP thing to your existing AP

I've just bought a Linksys WRT54G. I'm going to flash it with DD-WRT firmware and use it as a Wireless client for the Xbox and another media player to my existing Wireless network. Only costs about $70.

I did the same thing except I used 2 WRT54G's running tomato firmware. Make sure you get the wrt54gL because the newer wrt54g doesn't allow 3rd party firmware (or so I understand).

I use the WRT54G with DD-WRT for my xbox, runs sweet, I can stream HD-TV from my Vista MC to it no problems. Just make sure when you config the DD-WRT that you boost the power output, its defaulting at 28mW and the signal can get a little flakey at times.

I got a spare D-Link G604T and was hoping to use that to get an xbox360 on teh LAN wirelessly

You can only use routers that are compatible with the DD-WRT firmware, and only about 80 or so routers are.

Though I just got a new router today. The Asus WL-520GC. It's compatible with the DD-WRT firmware, and it's only $45 from Umart. That's an even cheaper alternative to the WRT54G.

You can use any router that lets you set it up as a wireless client or a bridge. If you find another router that has this functionality built into the stock firmware then that's fine you can use that but if stock firmware doesn't offer it you'll need 3rd party firmware. Apart from that no there's nothing particularly special about wrt54gl's

Heh I saw this thread bumped and came in to post the exact same thing. I picked one up this arv and put the DD-WRT micro firmware on it, works a treat.

Crazy that a $45 pretty much full-featured router (and 4 port wired lan) is cheaper than any bridge and even most USB/PC-Card adapters.

is it easy to update the firmware and set this up with the ASUS?

Upgrading the firmware on the ASUS is easy as. You just download the firmware from the DD-WRT site, go into the HTML setup page on the router and upload it. When it restarts, you'll be greeted with the DD-WRT homepage. It's probably best to do it over ethernet though, because it might be a pain in the arse to constantly have to log into it over wireless.

As for setting it up as a bridge, I haven't tried, but on the front page of the wireless setup, there's a dropdown box to change it from an access point to a bridge. It looks pretty straight forward.

^^If you read the instructions it actually tells you to only ever update it using Ethernet, I'm not sure if those are DD instructions of the ones in the Linksys firmware when you open the help but it is written somewhere in there. I can't check since I'm not using either anymore. I think it also recommends you use a static IP for the upload, then reset the defaults and change back to a dynamic IP but screw that I've never done it and both my routers still work fine.

Haha, well I guess it's lucky that I did it over ethernet then! =P

But yeah, I didn't bother setting a static IP either, and it worked without a hitch. I'd definitely go this route rather than dishing out for a Microsoft wireless adaptor. Hell, you could buy three of these routers and you still would have saved money.

Yeah, $169 is completely f***ing ridiculous, when you can get a reliable, fully featured wired and wireless router for less than a third of the price. I'd rather spend 5 minutes "f***ing around" and have the extra money in my pocket.

Another advantage of the MS official adapter is it's size, it clips neatly on and draws power from the console's USB.

Any other solution is going to have some form of power brick.

That said, imo the convenience/neatness factor nowhere near compensates for the price difference. $170 for a wireless bridge is robbery.

Also, if your 360 is in your main tv entertainment unit and you have any other network devices there, the $45 asus solution can function as a switch for them all and a wireless link to anything else in your house. The official MS adapter only serves its sole individual purpose.

blarrgh, none of the f***ing firmware will take. anyone got specific link? there are about 1000000000000000000 types of firmware on that site.

Looks like that guy has released some newer vers since then though. Might be worth checking out. I never bothered checking, but the stock asus firmware might work just fine for the simple task of getting the xbox on wireless anyway. I just wanted to see what extra bells and whistles I could get out of it.

micro distribution. Some routers will only accept the smallest possible distro of it.

yep got the asus,managed to get dd-wrt.v24_micro_olsrd_generic.bin up on it. can't seem to get it working yet though.

except i dont have WEP security, i am using mac filtering.

i have allowed mac filtering for three mac addresses that i found associated with the asus on my regular router, but still no joy :|. will try some more tomorrow i spose.

Personally, wouldn't worry about security until I got the network functioning. Then do s*** like enable WPA and disable SSID broadcasting, mac filtering etc.

Unless you're worried someone is going to be haxxing you in the few minutes it should take to get things otherwise running.

the other benefit of the wireless bridge, is that it usually has 4 network ports.

most of the time the 360 would be in the lounge room, so now u have 3 spare ports for either other consoles, Hi-def players, even network connected media gateway etc.

Yea after trying a few i ended up using dd-wrt.v24-9346_NEWD_micro.bin From /downloads/others/eko/RC7-9346 on the dd-wrt site.

Tried the micro generics and micro asuss with no Joy the newd micro works fine so long as you use IE to edit settings.
Firefox shows a white screen when trying to save any settings as theres some login bug.

Sorry for bumping but its better than posting a new thread. Going by what examplar said, wireless adapters like this one work with the xbox360? Or do I have the wrong idea?

Fixed. Copy pasting the URL is a bad idea it seems.

I don't think that'd work, as the 360 wouldn't have the necessary drivers to make it function. I could be wrong, as I haven't looked into it.
