Ok I saw this last night and thought i'd start a public service announcement warning people of this film. If your thinking of going to see this...

ITS A f***ING MUSICIAL

And not your simple, "im going to break into a song at the right moment musical" no. This is the grand f***ing champion of horrid musicals. This is a movie that feels that for 1 hour and 45 min of the 2 hour movie there is nothing but singing. There is rarely a gap of 2 or 3 minutes between each song and all but 1 of the songs are just so bad its hard to stomach (there is one where depp is singing to his razors, yes you read that right, that wasnt too bad). This was the only movie I have ever walked out on, which led me to see cloverfield again next door for free. No where on any of the cinema websites does it say its a musical at all. The closest it says is

"big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller"

Which could mean anything at all. If you love musicals and violence then this would be you. However if, like me, you expected an actual movie then perhaps you should pick something diffrent.

EDIT - Also just to be clear I dont hate musicals. If there had been 1 song every, say 10 min then I could of watched it all but this was like an audio CD with visuals

I never saw the trailer to it. I'll never make that mistake again. I just assumed tim burton and johnny depp would = awesomness like they usualy do.

Lol... It's not like they hid the fact that it's a musical. Just because you're too stupid to actually read about a movie before watching it, doesn't mean it's a bad movie.

I usually hate musicals, but I thought this one was pretty cool.

Why does not reading about a movie before watching make you stupid?

If you go into a movie not knowing the basic content of the movie and then complain about it when it's not what you expected, then yeah, that makes you stupid.

Some of the most successfull movies have been musicals. It's frankly a surprise they don't make more of them.

Kamma: While you do have a point. When there is big hype surrounding a movie, you tend to go in blind. I did the same with LOTR, 300 and those types of movies. I'm not a big movie person so when everyone is talking about movie X, I go "oh really? ok i'll check it out". This is just me however.

Thats my whole point though. I read the discription on the birch website and it said nothing about being a musical. It only said it was adapted from one which could mean anything. A porno can be adapted from a musical. I knew it was about a guy called sweeney todd who wanted revenge for being imprisoned and taken from his wife/child. I didnt want to read a full review as that could of spoiled parts of the movie for me i was about to see in a few hours. 2 points however

1.) Its by Tim Burton. Who the hell would of expected him to do a musical, espcialy when teaming up with Depp again.

2.) Its MA with violence warnings. Never seen that in a musical before

However i'll say again. I dont hate musicals. The main problem I have isn't that the film was a musical. I could of watched it if it was a normal musical. My main gripe is that all the discriptions of the film basicly tricked me (and a lot of others no doubt as 8 people left the cinemas before i did) into seeing it without any warning of what it actualy was. All i'm trying to do is warn people that if they want to see it, watch out that it is a musical, and very badly done one at that.

The breaking into song on the ads, not to mention the shorts for when they speak about awards, didn't give it away?

It's actually human instinct. I read about this, it comes from trusting that what others do will keep from getting f***ed up, like watching what fruit others pick, or where they choose to sleep.

universal acclaim, must be a pretty good movie/musical despite what DM thinks...

I started to watch it but couldn't get into it. I knew it was going to be a musical but I didn't think every scene was gonna be singing. It did have some stuff going for it though, like the over the top scenes when he cut their throats and blood sprayed everywhere like something you'd see in a Japanese action flick.

this version of the story was based on the hugely successful broadway musical of sweeney todd from the 80s i think

Under normal circumstances i would agree, but over the last couple of weeks i have heard the radio adverts and read one short summary of the movie, all of which failed to mention it was a musical.

I was ready to go see it until i saw this thread.

I know ara, it's classic.

Me, I knew it was a musical, had seen it on stage as a musical, and thoroughly enjoyed the film.

(and the sight of a couple of n00bs getting up and leaving 20 minutes into the movie)

Its not bad, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as I was expecting it to be. And I agree, I think it did have too much singing. I went in knowing it was a musical, and I've enjoyed other musicals recently like the Producers, Moulin Rouge and Chicago, but it just felt like there was too much music and not enough normal movie, they sung EVERYTHING, even stuff that they really didn't need to, it did start to make the movie feel like a chore for me by the end.

And that young sailor kid was so f***ing boring, the movie would have been a lot better if they completely dropped him and his stupid joanna song that he sung EVERY TIME he had a scene.

FYI, the Sondheim musical is pretty much non-stop singing, with virtually no spoken dialogue. If anything, they cut a lot out song-wise and added more talking.

Having seen both the stage musical and the film, I say the film makes reasonably good use of the medium. Better than a few other broadway-to-film adaptations of recent years.

I thought it was great. It was hard to get into it at first due to the dozen 16 year old wankers behind me thinking the cinema was the local maccas or something, non stop talking and laughing every time someone started singing. I laughed when they said that they didn't know it was a musical though.

My observation is that the Producers realized that ppl won't see it when they realize it's a musical. Therefore when the first round of advertisments came out a few weeks ago none of them mentioned that it was a musical and did not show anyone singing.
Now, all the commercials I've seen have Johnny busting out tunes and the voiceover dude saying it's based on a musical.

My conclusion is that they would sucker a in the early crowds who were expecting the usual Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp macarbe a la Edward ScissorHands, Sleepy Hollow. Then when the 'secret' is out a couple of days after the first lot of walk-outs and everyone knows its a musical they start playing the commercials stating that it's and 'award winning blah blah blah'.

You know that it's based off a Broadway musical? Funny that they had a lot of singing in it.

I thought it was great. That is all.

Seriously, was anyone else falling asleep during the sailor boys scenes? I inwardly groaned every time he came on screen, his scenes could not possibly have been any duller and his song was so annoying s*** yet he continued to sing it ALL THE TIME.

That's not like you to be bored during sailor boy scenes, Khel.

I'd agree that he's the lamest character in the movie though.
