A site i read has introduced a feature 'related links'. Registered users submit links related to the thread or just of general interest to the site's degenerates.
Users + or - the links depending on what they think of them and a running total is shown on the link. It's done in ajax and works all nice without having to reload the page. On that site the links are tied to topics but that's cause it's not really a forum. I recon it'd work well here, cause whenever someone posts a non-funny pic or boring video the thread quickly fills with actual funny/good stuff that people must've been queuing up waiting for the opportunity to post. This would provide a constant opportunity without the overhead of having to start a seperate thread. On QGL the links wouldn't need to be tied to individual forum threads, just a general quick-link section: allow registered users to post quick links. Links are visible to all viewers. Links can get rated (+/-) by registered users Anyone posting stupid links gets hurt (goatse). You can only submit links if you have >50 posts and accounts older than 6 months. All that is displayed for each link is title, which submitter supplies and is clickable, host domain, submitter and count of +'s. You can click the number and it pops up who voted for it. They have a Top links page which shows top rated links for last 24 hours by category and overall QGL categories like News, Interesting, Funny pic, video and spoot would probably work well. If the person that submits top rated link for the week gets -5% on their post limiter then it may encourage a fair bit of use. |

Yeah look I don't think it will work. From a technical standpoint it's fine, and it's been done.
Here is the part I don't think will work... the psychology of it. You find a big list of 'funny' links, it's never as good as getting an email forward from someone you know, or as part of a discussion on a forum. I always pass on funny s*** from the forum to work mates, and the boss came up with this plan to archive all the funny stuff on our server to give people a shot of funny when morale was low or something... I just don't think it would be the same... |

I like it, but its the way all forums are going
we love qgl because its qgl a good qgl thread requires any of the following uninformed ranting stupidly random post after stupidly random post dissing someone like kat / paveway etc |

I don't like it, I hate being told what is funny and what isn't.
I think you're just bored and up yourself. So relax man, things are pretty good around here without your thought control. |

uninformed rantingf*** off teq, you don't know what you're talking about! Did you hear about how chickens do stuff? It's awesome! Also, Kat is ugly/has a lame number plate/is a bad mother/shouldn't get married/is a bogan... Paveway likes Maxe a little bit too much for comfort. |

Yeh, have to say I like the discussions about the funny / unfunny s*** that get posted around here and wouldn't like to see that change. Maybe if it was incorporated into some sort of a discussion thing it might be ok?
Also, Obes is lame. |

A few topics from digg/reddit/shoutwire usually end up as discussion points on here anyways.

Maybe you could mark a thread or specific post as being a 'link post' and then somewhere there is a list of these posts, ranked by popularity or something. That way the forum goes on as normal and people can still carry on.
