someone might help here.

the sump seems to need a special key or tool to be undone.

im just used to the usual sealed bolt like on most cars ive owned. (its the wifeys car)

anyone confirm or deny the need for a specific tool for this or am i looking in the wrong place. doesnt seem to be any other possible location for it.

if so is it likely the tool would be with the car on purchase (bought new)
not with the jack kit. not with the owners manual.

I'm thinking it's a big huge torx key, like an allen key only worse.

and no, tools used for service are usually only held by mechanics since you're supposed to take it back to them for services and give them more money. Not likely they'd enable you to do it yourself that easily hence the special tool needed.

They can be alittle harder to get then an alan key set but still they do exist.

i had a 2004 barina, go to recpo and ask for a torx set
also, if you want to buy a full set of coilovers and a rear (whiteline) swaybar for it, I still have it here in the shed

Wow read the article about philips screw drivers. Two interesting points
- The screw driver is forced into the center of the screw
- The screwdriver slips out to prevent over tightening

I've got a set of torx tools, if you get stuck and are on the southside or westside where you should be I can drop em round

torx bolts are great because they are extremely hard to strip.

also, in a location like the sump, they are extremely hard to damage in such a way that you can no longer use them. probally not a big issue on a barina.

Not really. I come closer to stripping torx before any normal bolt. And once you've strip a torx bolt they're much harder to get out than a conventional bolt.

it just comes on a socket connector which works for me.
only 10 bucks.

^^ small torx bolts are extremely easy to strip, I come across them all the damn time and they s*** me to tears, the larger ones are great and pretty much impossible to strip though.

when i worked for Compaq/HP all their PCs and laptops uses torx screws. it was great.

the only time they were stripped was when some nub went to town on them with a phillips head instead of a torx and even then they had a flat blade channel across them so you could always bust out a normal screw driver and remove the screw if it was too far gone.

compared to the amount of grief that phillips head screws cause from people using the wrong size bits on them, torx are superior. similarly torx bolts are superior to normal bolts, the big proviso is that you have the correct bits.
