This is awesome. A black hole in a Galaxy a long way from here (about 1 10th the distance across the known universe) is emitting an enormous jet. This has been observed a lot of times before, but never have we seen one of these jets hit something. in this case, the target is a small neighboring galaxy. Someone in that little galaxy is having a real bad day.

Don't you mean someone in that galaxy had a bad day 1.4 billion years ago?

Isn't the basics of a black hole, is that it's magnetic pull is so strong that nothing can escape (including light which is why it's black) ?

Time to go read up on my astro-pyshics.

radiation is not effected by gravity and is released.

There is so much matter being sucked into this super massive black hole that there is excess material being spat off to the side of the event horizon. Given this, the ray is matter not from the black hole, just because of it.

I thought the general theory of relativity said otherwise?

I bet Nasa made it up just so they keep getting their funding.

I was under the impression that all matter in the vicinity is sucked into a black hole, the matter is crushed and ultimately destroyed. Energy released from the destruction is then ejected out the north and south poles of the black hole. Since energy has no weight it is free to escaped the pull of gravity.

Energy has no weight, though light does seem to (it is affected by gravity).
It's unclear whether light is a form of energy or a photon particle, as it seems to have the properties of both.

3dee, get your dad to tell us wtf is going on.

no lynx you are part right, but mostly wrong.

the space surrounding a black hole is that curved by the immense gravity nothing can escape, not even light. the signature of a black hole is the xrays (i think) from matter being pulled smashed by the gravity just before it passes the event horizon.

so its the radiation that comes from the matter getting destroyed before it makes it past the event horizon (at which point the radiation wouldn't be able to escape - is that right?
