Has anyone bought one recently or can recommend a good one for 800 to 1200 dollars?
Basically I'm after a unit with at least 3 component inputs, HDMI switching would also be good. DD EX, DTS ES, DPLIIx etc, anyone in the know for what's decent? |

question: do they sell those things that aren't so damn huge? I've looked inside ours (the vents I haven't taken it apart) and it's mostly just empty space in there, looks like it could be about half the height it is. The only low profile ones I've seen are those cheap s*** ones that are like a dvd player + av switcher built into one unit. |

I'd imagine the size is for two reasons
So they can fit like a billion input/outputs on it. http://www.qualifi.com.au/mmbase/images/103738 And for cooling ability. My old school marantz receiver has a huge heatsink that needs a big case |

well after a bit of shopping around I chose the Onkyo TX-SR605 from JB. It's a sorta starter-mid range level, but has a ton of features including HDMI 1.3 switching and support for the Dolby and DTS True HD 7.1 formats on Bluray etc so should be decent for the next few years :)

yeah, was about to come in a say the onkyo txsr605, but yeah, you already decided :)
it's pretty much the best bang for buck, plus it does composite/component upconversion to HDMI (not upscaling though, but hey....) |
