Hey guys, quick question about a graphics card.

Im using a 6600gt 128MB pci graphics card with 1Gb of DDR2 ram. Processor is a P4 3.06Ghz. A mate of mine has a similar set up but is using 1.0Gb of DDR ram instead.

His graphics card noticably out performs mine. We have the graphics settings set the same eg. vert sync off, HDR on, antialiasing off. We get around the same fps (only like 30 or so), but his textures are alot smoother eg. arcs actually look like arcs whereas mine are a series of lines put together to look like an arc. Iv checked that its all running at 16x.

Any idea's what the issue might be?

Drop $140 and get an 8600GT - problem solved.

Just to give you an idea of what I mean. Heres a screenshot.

I know its not a great graphics card, but Im pretty sure its meant to be better than this.

There's a quality/performce slider option in the nvidia drivers under the 3d settings, it looks like it might be that. Otherwise not too sure, that screenshot looks like it is lacking AA

yeah I tried antialiasing on a range of settings and it improved slightly, but still looked crap. Im stumped.. reckon it could be my mainboard? not enough ram?

That would explain your lack of performance.

Heh I just had a look at mine and with an 8800GTS on an asus motherboard the picture looks exactly the same. I've noticed though no matter what I do even with my 8800gts some aspects of cs looked better on my old ATI x1300 video card. Stupid valve and their preference for ATI hardware. So I don't think it's just your hardware giving you issues, I'd say it's a driver thing.

Makes no difference to me though, first thing I do in games is turn the quality all down way low to get the most fps I possibly can :p

edit: yep it's that quality/performance slider in the nvidia control panel. I just whacked it from "let the application decide" to "use this setting emphasizing: quality" and the difference is really noticeable and probably what you're looking for.
