RC1 of Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista is out. Clicky

I've just installed it, it takes a while. You have to install two updates for the updater before and reboot after each.

The good thing is, it seems to have made Vista much quicker. Media Centre seems way faster.

Use at your own risk, but I've had no issues so far.

I wonder if they've fixed my computer hanging while retaining mouse movement after 20 minutes of use.. Otherwise I'd be using Vista for the most part. The bloody thing just freezes over over about a minute leaving the mouse cursor intact.

Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios1:
• 25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
• 45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
• 50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system
• Improves responsiveness when doing many kinds of file or media manipulations. For example, with Windows Vista today, copying files after deleting a different set of files can make the copy operation take longer than needed. In SP1, the file copy time is the same as if no files were initially deleted.
• Improves the copy progress estimation when copying files within Windows Explorer to about two seconds.
• Improves the time to read large images by approximately 50%.

This is from their Professional deployment documentation. If this proves to be true, they may well have solved my biggest issue with Vista, the slow file copy speeds.

I've got terrabytes of Media on my Vista Ultimate PC and when I move them around it take forever, yay if they've fixed this.

• Windows Vista SP1 Release Candidate is Time-Limited software. It will no longer operate after June 30, 2008 and should be uninstalled prior to that date

That's in the Standalone's "Before You Install.doc"

Why do you tell us that Hermi? Whats normal for MS betas.

Also, I noticed that copying IS faster, and the progress bar moves smoothly now, where as before, it would sit there doing nothing for ages, and finally decide to move when its nearly over.

That was one of my biggest annoyances with vista, I just threw on SP1 RC1 and it seems great so far! Progress bars work how they should and copying stuff over the network seems much smoother to me.

I agree, the copying thing has pissed me off enormously. If that's been fixed, I'm downloading this the moment I get home.

"... may take up to 1 hour to install... reboot multiple times..."

2hrs and 17 mins later :/

By the time it was finished I was all done for the day @ work, so Vista get's 2 more days of life before I make final judgement on it's fate on my work PC. If it's not running better then I'm back on the XP bandwagon.

Mine took 30 mins max from the start of the installation... sounds like you all have ass pc's

Yes there are some pre req patches that have to be installed first but that isn't the service pack.

ditto on 30 mins here as well
Copied across a 10gb file @ 70MB/sec (Gigabit LAN)
Opened a second smaller file ~ 700mb an it copied at 5MB/sec
Original file transfer speed dropped to 30MB/sec an hadn't recovered to original speed once I cancelled the other file at about 50%

So far so good (sorta) :/
Now all we need to do is figure out how to tweak it

Why do you tell us that Hermi? Whats normal for MS betas.

I only mentioned it in case some newbie decided that they could try an run it for ever or install the final release over the top.

Ewwww watermark in the bottom right corner... I did not notice this yesterday :(

I had a bit of a google and found some fixes by replacing user32.dll.mui but that hasn't worked on my x64 install.

Maximum gay! If anyone finds a watermark removal method that works for x64 please post it here.

Mine says

Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6001

Sits just above the time/date in the taskbar.

I'm sure it wasn't there all of yesterday so you'll probably find it will appear for you eventually.

Apparently, its just a warning the the SP1 RC1 build this thread is not permanent software (time limited). It will be gone once the full build of SP1 is out and you uninstall RC1.

I am aware of that but its fugly and annoying and I'd rather not have it assault my eyes every time my desktop loads.

As far as I'm aware, there's no way to disable desktop watermarks on the x64 version of Vista. Lame, I know.
