pretty good, but you may want to consider a Raptor as your hard drive if the budget allows. is good for load times and heavy hard drive access programs

I'd get two smaller drives, but I'd not stripe them. One drive dies and you're gonna lose the whole lot. A Raptor+A 320 might be worth considering. Maybe consider 4GB RAM. I'm still a big fan of the Antec Sonata case. Otherwise you've got yourself a decent system here.

Raptors are great for chucking your OS and swap files on, makes a nice difference in load times at boot and in applications.

The GT is overpriced (wait)
And why bother with the soundcard. The mobo is nice. I have a DS3P and the missus PC has a DS3L. So far both have been great. |

Is the PSU going a bit over the top? 650w seems excessive for the hardware. PSU Calc website can give an indication of the power requirements you'll need.

Nah, I'd say it's worth having headroom, he might want to add more hdds and stuff later after all. Seen too many people invest in crummy power supplies who are then forced to upgrade them later...

A few suggestions...
- Are you gonna make use of the Quad? If not then maybe go a 1333mhz FSB C2D CPU to match the mobo - Are you o/c-ing? If not then just go 800mhz RAM once again to match mobo - 74G or 150G Raptor for OS & grunty apps or games = win. Move your swap file off to the SATA - 8800GT pwns my SLI 8800GTS in 3dmark06, so it's just a matter of finding stock. - Case is personal pref, but I'm also an Antec fan based simply on accessibility and ease of use. They also (mostly) come with speed-selectable 120mm fans, helps keep the noise down - Try get a modular PSU (removable cables) to keep the case clean and free for airflow, and try find one with a 120mm fan to keep the noise down You can always wait for the next price drop or the next big thing, but in the end you might as well just do it. |

After working in the industry for a few years...
Not a big fan of gigabyte, although they are getting better. Also not a fan of Antec PSUs I personally think raptors are a massive waste of money. They don't give that much of a speed improvement to justify the extra $$ imo. I personally have 2 7200rpm drives striped as my OS partition. I also agree with mrwolf - if you aren't planning on playing the OC game then theres no benefit of having 1000mhz RAM over 800. |

I'm thinking of going for a new rig soon. I still can't decide between a 2gb matched pair for dual channel or 4gb unmatched pair for ram. It's the age old 'quantity vs speed' debate.
That rig listed looks pretty good, I'd recommend a better case though (like an Antec or something) and a better HDD config. I'm planning on going for 2 small sata drives in raid for my OS/Games/etc and then having a couple of massive storage drives to store all my goodies on... as in my legitimately acquired media. That way if your OS gets raped by a virus or something, you won't lose all your pr0n. |

You can buy 2x2gb matched pairs these days, also corsair sell quad matched packs. Agree with rubba, gigabyte are iffy and antec psu's are balls. |

So is that quad matched pack four 1gb sticks that run as 2 dual channelled pairs? The 2x2gb matched pair packs seem a bit too pricey.

P5KR is an intel chipset meaning you can't use nvidia's SLI mode, you need to use ATI cards. Don't ask me why it's different but that's what I was told by conrad at computer alliance when I bought my rig (different mobo but still an intel chipset). You'll need an nforce chipset motherboard if you wish to SLI 2x nvidia cards at a later stage.
