There is no satisfactory setup for 5.1 speakers.

Cables and s*** go just bloody everywhere.

The worst thing is the speakers I have, logitech, use a rca type cable thing to connect the computer to the front-right speaker, then a vga cable goes from that speaker to the sub woofer, and then the sub woofer connects in parallel to the 4 remaining speakers, using 4 separate f***ing wires.

Why didn't they just connect the computer to the sub woofer? The front right speaker is like the furthest speaker away! On top of that the headphone socket is in the front right speaker too, making it completely inaccessible.

I've read about the supposed 'wireless' speaker systems - which is an absolute crock because the speakers are still wired together in pairs, the front speakers are connected to the computer with wires, and you need 3 power cables to power the separate circuits.

Is anyone here happy with the 5.1 speaker setup they have? I guess they only way I'd be happy would be to put the wires under carpet or some s***...

Its annoying, but theres not much you can do about it. FYI, my Logitech 5.1 speakers use 3x headphone jack into the computer, all coming out of the centre speaker, and the centre speaker connects to the subwoofer using a DB15 connector and a really phat cable. Power goes into the sub.

All I can say is damn creative for not doing DD or DTS encoding on the fly. Would be so much nicer to have 1 cable from PC to amp.

My 5.1 setup is wire city. I try not to move it around much.

Here is something for hilarity:

The Audigy 2 ZS sub-woofer out port does not produce an acceptable volume (even when setting sub-woofer volume in the drivers to max). So to fix, I have to have a pre-amp between my PC and my main amp to boost the sub-woofer line level output. More wires FTW!! ... or not.

i have no problem with my speeker wires. all audio from the computer go into a control pannel. then one cable from that into the sub (and amp as such) then from there out to all the speekers.

I can move the control pannel to where ever it suits me best.

Creative 5.1 ftw

All connect to the sub, then 3 cables from sub -> comp (they're bundled)

You cant really avoid the clusterf*** when dealing with 5 speakers though :/ but i have a pile of spaghetti behind my sub out of sight so it's all good

And really the next step after setting up 5.1 is getting your stereo and tv to play through your 5.1 setup (this might be easier with the control panel thing) - so this just means more cables. Sure this part of it could be done wirelessly.

I'd say some inteligent company will implement WirelessUSB or something like that for connection between HT components once it becomes more common. Obviously due to the ridiculous bandwidth that is required for HDMI / DisplayPort, we won't see a wireless version of that anytime soon.

LG released some Bluetooth HT systems a while back, and their sound was particularly poor quality (723kbit lulz)

f*** 5.1

Go out and get 2 huge-ass speakers for left and right and dump a sub in the middle. I don't have a sub yet but I do have a nice big middle speaker. Got the PC plugged into the amp. Turned up about halfway the speakers shake the floor and movies sound f***ing awesome thru them.

But that's prolly not a good option seeing as you already have your speakers.

The problem with that Rev is that the bulk of dialogue audio in movies comes through the Central speaker - which you don't have (except for very low frequencies). So dialogue will appear to come from "off screen", along with music and effects - which is incorrect. Sounds majestic and awesome, but it is incorrect nevertheless.

I just tell PowerDVD that I'm using 2 speakers and it works fine. I guess it would sound weird if I had it set to more speakers.

speaker hell!? this is more like a speaker minor irritance..

maybe if your speakers were zapping you and your neighbours rendering you in a parralised state whilst your dog licked ur eyeball, that'd be close to speaker hell..

I think a lot of them do, they're just really poor.

If you own the house, asifn't just run speaker cabling through the walls and mount the rears (<-like your dad does).

Solid concrete walls :/

Telling software that it is missing a speaker doesn't make a new speaker spawn by magic. In other words, balancing someone's voice across a stereo speaker system is not the same as having the voice come from the point of the TV.
